The Obama administration deported nearly 400,000 people last year – a record – with the number driven up by those tossed out for traffic violations and drunken driving, according to a report on Friday.

The focus on ousting those with relatively minor offenses raises questions about whether the administration has lived up to its promise to focus on deporting the most dangerous offenders, the Associated Press says.

During the fiscal year that ended in Sept. 30, 393,000 people were deported, and half of those were considered criminals. Of the criminal deportations, 7 percent were based on traffic violations, 23 percent were drug violations and 14 percent were drunken driving violations, according to an analysis by the AP.

President Obama has said that his administration’s enforcement policy seeks to target the “worst of the worst” and not individuals who have come to the country to work, but the large number of people who were deported after having committed minor crimes challenges that idea, the report said.

Administration officials disputed the findings, saying that it is difficult to capture the increase in arrests of dangerous criminals because they are currently in jail in the U.S. and have not been deported, which means they are not reflected in current deportation statistics.

“The more serious offenders are still in prison,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told the AP. “We’re not going to see them reflected in the numbers until we can begin to remove them.”

The increase in deportations comes against the background of stalled immigration reforms legislation in Congress and an effort by both parties to reach out to a burgeoning group of Latino voters, which make up a key constituency in several key swing states and are expected to have even more political clout in coming decades.

Obama has come under criticism from the left for increasing deportations and not acting more quickly on the immigration reform legislation, which was a significant part of his 2008 campaign.

While overall deportations are up, the Obama administration has not aggressively enforced several high profile immigration cases involving young people who were brought to this country illegally when they were young and are now attending college, a decision that is in line with the directive to law enforcement to focus on criminals, according to the AP.

US arrests 2,000 in anti-drug sting

http://news.yahoo.com/us-arrests-2-0...211036333.html

US authorities have arrested nearly 2,000 people on narcotics charges in a 20-month sting targeting Mexico's La Familia Michoacana drug cartel, the US Justice Department said Thursday.

The ongoing multi-agency takedown saw 1,985 people arrested, along with the seizure of about $62 million in US dollars, and more than 12 tons of drugs.

The arrests and charges were carried out in 12 states and the US capital Washington in a major operation dubbed "Project Delirium" and the announcement came just two months after Mexican law enforcement officials arrested La Familia leader Jose de Jesus Mendez-Vargas.

"Project Delirium is the second successful, strategic and surgical strike to disrupt and destroy one of the most violent Mexican cartels, La Familia," said administrator Michele Leonhart of the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

"Through their violent drug trafficking activities, including their hallmark of supplying most of the methamphetamine imported into the United States, La Familia is responsible for recklessly and violently destroying countless lives on both sides of the border."

Among the drugs which were rounded up were 2,773 pounds (1,258 kilograms) of methamphetamine, 6,000 pounds (2,722 kilograms) of cocaine, 1,005 pounds (456 kilograms) of heroin, 14,818 pounds (6,721 kilograms) of marijuana and $3.8 million in other assets.

Deputy Attorney General James Cole said Project Delirium and other such efforts were "disrupting the operations of Mexican drug cartels in the United States and Mexico."

"The arrests and seizures we are announcing today have stripped La Familia of its manpower, its deadly product and its profit, and helped make communities large and small safer," he added, vowing cooperation with Mexican law enforcement to "diminish and ultimately eliminate" drug cartels.

Since June 1 alone, 221 individuals were arrested across the United States, including over 70 people just Wednesday and Thursday, as part of the operation, according to US Justice Department figures.

Mexico's Secretary of Public Security Genaro Garcia Luna hailed the "increased information-sharing and collaboration with the DEA," saying it had allowed for more significant arrests and seizures of drugs and money.

Those arrested under the operation were charged with a variety of crimes ranging from distribution of methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, money laundering and conspiracy to import narcotics into the United States.

The multi-agency Special Operations Division coordinated the investigative efforts -- with agents culled from the DEA, FBI, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Internal Revenue Service, US Customs and Border Protection, US Marshals Service and the Justice Department.

More than 300 federal, state, local and foreign law enforcement agencies participated in the operation.

The second post seems out of place in this thread....

Deporting the worst of the worst, yeah right, they almost deported a dreamer that was never even charged with having committed any crime in the first place, a family member calls to get a car opened, they do that service and take the dreamer for no reason, we heard of that case but how many dreamers have been deported under similar circumstances. And how was he even going to be deported in just a week when there are supposedly worse criminals waiting in line to get deported?

They have even deported LPR individuals and even a USC that surfaced a while, officials did not believe he was a USC because he looked hispanic and did not speak english and somehow ended up signing his own deportation order.

There are too many issues with this administration between what it says it hopes to do and what its actually doing, just look at secure communities, its doing the complete opposite and ensuring communities are more divided than ever before.

Unfortunately, inaction is not an appropriate response, and I bet we are going to see the fake progressives come up and start an ad campaign trying to get Latinos not to vote as they did during the last set of elections last year trying to proclaim the choice of "no voting" to teach democrats a lesson.

We supposedly have an ally in the white house that supports the DREAM Act that seems to be ignorant of the damage Secure Communities has the potential of doing to communities, and is trying to ram that down the throats of states that don't want to take part in it as a result of the various detrimental issues. Voluntary application of the law was never really voluntary, as it suggested at the very beginning it seems.

Truthfully, the only difference between you and Deportations hit record number experts is time. If you'll invest a little more time in reading, you'll be that much nearer to expert status when it comes to Deportations hit record number.
Of course, it's impossible to put everything about Deportations hit record number into just on this topic. But you can't deny that you've just added to your understanding about Deportations hit record number, and that's time well spent.
