Quote:
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) — a major advocate for the DREAM Act, which would create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children — said the new process will stop almost all deportations of people that his legislation is designed to protect.
“We need to be doing all we can to keep these talented, dedicated, American students here, not wasting increasingly precious resources sending them away to countries they barely remember,” Durbin said in a statement. “The Administration’s new process is a fair and just way to deal with an important group of immigrant students and I will closely monitor DHS to ensure it is fully implemented.”
And Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) released a statement praising the move, saying it is “a step in the right direction.” He also called for Congress to work together toward “enacting tough, smart, and fair comprehensive immigration reform.
I will be editing this post regularly as I discover what are the steps to apply for a work permit.

God Bless America.

Criteria
(Same as Dream Act)

1. Came to the U.S. as children (15 or under)
2. Are long-term U.S. residents (continuous physical presence for at least five years)
3. Have good moral character
4. Graduate from high school or obtain a GED
5. Complete two years of college or military service in good standing

I have also heard that veterans, pregnant women and victims of a crime are going to be able to apply. Just meet the number2 and 3 of the points above and prove that you're a vet, pregnant etc..

How to apply (As of now)

Quote:
On a regular basis, ICE attorneys will individually review every case scheduled for a hearing within the next 1-2 months to identify those cases that meet these specific criteria. These cases will be closed except in extraordinary circumstances, in which case the reviewing attorney must receive the approval of a supervisor to move forward. DHS will also begin reviewing all 300,000 pending cases to identify those that meet these specific criteria. These cases will be closed except in extraordinary circumstances, in which case the reviewing attorney must receive the approval of a supervisor to move forward. Individuals whose cases are closed will be able to apply for certain immigration benefits, including work authorization. All applications for benefits will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

This is an "EXECUTIVE ORDER" therefore it CAN be revoked by a precedent president. YES WE DID! YES YOU WILL KEEP YOUR PROMISES.

Should I contact ICE to schedule a "hearing" or should I fork over $2,000 to an immigration attorney (ugh...)

Please do. God bless all of you and the people behind this important decision.

Important question: in case we can apply for a work permit, should we wait until we see the 2012 election results? Hopefully Obama gets re-elected. I ask this question because what will happen if we are in the system and, worst case scenario (my apologies if I sound negative), a Republican candidate wins?

This basically guarantees Obama a huge chunk of the Latino vote. A republican can't win the white house without the Latino, black and other minority vote.

I think you have to be in deportation proceedings before you can even qualify for this benefit.
