The change in deportation policy is an entirely positive thing. There is no doubt in my mind. Reasons twofold:
  1. This is a real, tangible, improvement in all of our daily lives. Maslow's hierarchy of needs comes to mind. Whether you agree with Maslow or not is not important. The importance of security cannot be understated. All of you can breathe lighter tonight and every night as the result of this victory. Please, stop and reflect on this point.

  2. The next time we march for our rights, fear won't be a factor; many more will join, and all of you should join. This is perhaps the part I am most optimistic about.

Those who are disappointed are disappointed for two reasons. Allow me to address both concerns:
  1. This will be used against us in the debate.

Which debate? By the time it's on C-SPAN, it is not debate, it is a spectacle. As for our opposition, they have no need for facts, they are aptly fighting with generalizations and fabrications.

The real debate happens every time you look somebody in the eyes and tell them why the Dream Act is important.

  2. This will be used as a downpayment on real reform.

Don't accept it. The reality is that you now have more security and you can take the fight to your legislators without fear.

If anti-immigrant forces can ask for walls, enforcement, more money, more border patrol, etc., get all of it, and STILL ask for more, so can you. Celebrate this win, but don't budge on what will fundamentally solve the problem.

This is a small step towards victory and the opposition needs to realize that they are not winning the fight. What happened yesterday tells the opposition to either hop on board or get defeated.

It's one small step for DREAMer's, and one huge step for America.

I agree. This is a good positive change for not only Dreamers but others who are undocumented.

There is more momentum then ever now.

Anyone find out about the work permit?

So in a way, this is quite a genius move for Obama. Keep in mind that he did it during congress' recces. haha

DA User, as a friend, I will give you this advice: don't turn yourself in. Obama is not to be trusted, and though I hardly ever agree with your opinions, I would hate to see you get deported on account of your optimism.

That should go for anybody else thinking of turning themselves in too.

who knows, he'll finally meet the love of his life and get married once he gets deported. It can be a happy ending after all

I think I am going to steal this quote if you don't mind, its just awesome.

And I agree with Nick, this is an opportunity to organize without fear and we better make it count this time, we can't afford to let this opportunity pass by or the momentum subside. If possible, find an organization around you, if there is no organization start one, there are many resources online and many individuals and organizations willing to help people start their own movements within their communities, whether the community is a city, a school or a close group of friends and family, it can be done.
