Gop blows off latinos in cnn/Tea Party express debate
Published: Tuesday, September 20, 2011 12:07 PM CDT
Roland S. Martin

While the media’s political high priests go gaga over Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann’s lying about the effects of the HPV vaccine and Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s cozy role with pharmaceutical giant Merck, the biggest issue to emerge from the CNN/Tea Party Express debate is virtually being ignored.

On Monday, a basic question about what the GOP should do to appeal to Latinos turned into a vicious discussion about building a wall along the Mexico-U.S. border, about how the DREAM Act is a horrible piece of legislation, and the typical Republican talking points about how awful illegal immigration is for the country.

Remember: The question had nothing to do with confronting illegal immigration. It was a softball question that any amateur politician could have answered in his or her sleep. About the only one who looked like a sane human being was Perry, who defended his efforts to provide state tuition to the children of illegal immigrants, a position that was met with resistance from the other candidates and the Tea Party audience.
Tea Party people hates you for what you are, and there will be no immigration reform of any kind as long as GOP is in power.

Cool. They can join the club of people who don't want me here because I am not leaving.

That glorious day will come :- ).

Not me. Look everyone, I know times are hard, but thinking about this will really hurt everyone. You either give up on the US and leave, or you suck it up and wait. Complaining or beind depressed will not help anything--no offense to anyone. But, it's the truth.

Lol, they can't get rid of us by crying and sitting around all day.

Seems like the Tea party's grip is slowly, but surely fading away.

Well said Smooth. Its always good to know that there are real people like you who won't let their situation get the best of them or be cowards and sink in their depression. This is what America, your home, has taught you...to not only fight, but fight for your justice. I respect that!

I am not surprised that the GOP did not have a plan to appeal to Latinos whatsoever, because this is what they do. You ask them a question and they'll just talk around it and change the topic without answering the question. Typical Republicans, huh. Don't you just love them because they are full of shit?! In any event, I heard Durbin made a speech about the Dream Act. Does anyone have a link or am I suppose to check it out on Youtube?

No Matter Who Wins The Next Or The Next Or The Next Election,
There Will Be No Immigration Reform. Democrats Or Republicans Don't Give A @#$% . If Democrats Cared Then In 2009 , They Had Full Control Of Congress And Presidency , Back Then If They Brought Dream Act For A Vote, It Would Have Passsed With 61 Votes In Senate And 220 Votes In House But Again They Are More Interested In Playing Football With Immigration Then Fixing It.

I see what you are saying, but then the question becomes: What are we doing here then? If we think like that, we might as well ask the moderators to shut down this website, and all of us should just go "home."

Come on guys, don't give up. Being depressed will not help at all. If anything, the feeling will, pardon my French, screw you over even more. Will being depressed give you a work permit? A high-paying job? No. I think many of us are looking at the glass half empty instead of half full. We cannot be deported, and we have the chance to apply for a work permit if we ever find ourselves in deportation proceedings.

With all due respect everyone, this is a waiting game; we wait, or we leave. I am waiting.
