Hey everyone, I have a hard time deciding what to do with my health.
On 6/19/11, I had a serious injury, tearing muscles that are used for breathing (diaphragm, abdominal & intercostal muscles) using a lung exercise device. It has been more than 3 months, and I'm still disabled. I cannot stand or sit up for long periods of time. I also have trouble breathing often; the past 100 days have took a toll on me.

The thing is that I'm a 4th year at a UC school, and withdrew from fall quarter due to this injury. Because testing and hospital fees are ridiculously high to pay out of pocket, I'm considering re-entering fall quarter as a part time student (tuition is $2,800 compared to $4,800 as a full time student). Even if i enroll as a part time, I would have to wait at least a month for tests to see what is exactly wrong with me.

When I told my parents about this (they are both in Korea), my dad wants me to come back to the country for medical treatment, because he has a job and I'll be fully covered. However, i'm a visa overstay AND i'm waiting for my 2nd attempt to get a green card through adoption. My dad told me not to worry, that he'll talk to a lawyer about me going back into the states after medical treatments, but as I have read in many posts, there is a 10 year ban for undocumented who leave the states.

I just don't know what to do. Should I risk being unable to finish my american uni degree which my parents have spent so much money and their blood on by going back to the country, or just stick with pain for at least 3 more months in the U.S., hope that i'll heal?

what do you guys think?

If the injury is life threatening you should leave IMO. Fucking hospital prices, I'm also unable to get proper treatment because of it, It's been 2 years now since I last saw a Doctor.

your in a tight situation. and honestly if your waiting for your 2nd attempt to have a GC then i'll say stay here and suck it up a bit.

wait 3 months or so. because if you leave right now all of your hard work in school and payments for your adjusting status and waiting for months maybe years. will go down the drain.

a lot of people and dream students are waiting for that kind of opportunity to even have a chance for having a GC! ur lucky!. and i bet a lot of us would be dying to get that. (literally!) so dont waste it.

so yeah. dont go home yet. find a hospital that can treat u (and maybe pay monthly) and friends that can help u financially.

unless, ur family in korea is really so damn rich.
life's a b*tch, i know.

In my honest opinion, I don't think we have enough information to decide whether you should leave US right away or endure pain until you finish school. For example, if your medical results come out and it turns out that if you're in danger of becoming disabled for the rest of your life if you don't receive treatment right away, I would definitely leave right away.

However, if the only thing that you're risking is the enduring pain during your time in US, I would finish up my school ASAP and leave.

Stay strong.

yeah, tyler129, that's the thing i'm most scared about. Will i be like this for the rest of my life, unable to move freely without getting worse? It's been more than 3 months, and i feel as if i've stopped getting better and that this injury is more serious than I anticipated.

I just made an appointment for a test, but the closest one is in Nov. 7, a f-ing month away. and the test requires a consultation 1st! i cannot help but to curse not only the health care in the U.S., but the country as well. The inability to travel (for whatever reason) within the country or international without fearing persecution is really screwing me (possibly killing me) right now.

So far, i'm leaning towards staying here for another 3 months and sticking with uncertainty of my health condition. Just scary...

Your health comes first and everything else second. Why would you continue risking your health by getting sub par treatment under current circumstances. South Korea is actually a great place to return to. Just my 2 cents.

Put your health above an immigration issue or education; without it you can't continue. You have a family supporting you 100% in Korea, that speaks volume of what you have coming home to. I know you have made a lot of sacrifices in the US, but health is not a gamble. If I was in your situation without a doubt I will go back.

But he is so close to getting his degree. If he goes back now, all the hard work will be wasted.

If you decided to go back, you should try to apply to a university in Korea. Maybe you can transfer some of your credits and finish your degree in there.
