To all people on this forum I need your help. This month I got the best but also arguably the worst news of my life. Earlier this month I was accepted at a top Australian university with an all encompassing scholarship that would cover tuition, room and board, books, travel, etc, etc. I mean EVERYTHING. I would also be included into a top australian engineering program that has a pipeline to some wicked engineering firms and airlines(I'm a budding aerospace engineer) and be given work-study options and summer housing. And to add it all off I have been awarded the visa to immigrate there within six months and the people at the university keep offering me additional perks to leave the states. But I need to respond by may first.

The only problem is I am conflicted. I am actually of Tokelauan/Tonagan ancestry(by some stupid loophole I couldn't get new zealand citizenship) so I have tons of family in Australia, the only problem is I need to respond by may first if I am to accept going to the program. I have family here, I have friends here, I have professors who I admire here. And although I hate my situation, I love America. The values of this nation flow through me, they live in me, our struggles, our lives, our fight lives in me as it lives in you. I know sometimes I have been negative(sorry if it pissed you guys off) but I love all of you guys and I believe in our movement. But if I leave then what? Am I a fool? Am I a dreamer? Am I simply just American?

The problem is what should I do? Everybody is telling me I would be a fool to give this up, but what if some relief happens? I couldn't arguably get this scholarship again, so this is a one shot deal. But if I do accept the scholarship I would need to leave the country by may 31st in order to attend orientation for the program.

What should I do? I need your help. Please give me some ideas on what you think I should do. I need to decide in three days.

I know, I know. It's just I'm 18 and heading towards soph year at uni and I have a gf and everything, along with some cool research coming up. Plus things seem as if they're heating up on the immigration front here but my question is should I wait on a dream or just go and grab what's already here on a plate for me? I would hurt not to see my mom and dad and three sisters for like a couple of years(If I go to australia though I could just bring them over in a few years though), I'm just torn inside. I have to say goodbye to everything I have ever known, ever seen, ever dreamt. Oh god i must sound dramatic as hell right now.

At this point the scholarship is a sure thing. The DREAM Act is a loooong shot. Even if it does pass you will not get help w paying your school. So if I were you I'd take it.

Now, I see. I would take it. If you think that you will be happy there, take it, man. Blessings.

You're 18, take it and go! Have someone petition for you 6 months or so after you leave. Then study and finish up! You have NO ban on coming back from the country if you are 18.5 yrs old or less. If you're more than that, then your ban is likely 0-3 years. This is a good way to burn the time and get straight. Once, you're done studying, you should be good to apply for a US job and get sponsored or just apply for a visa to travel and visit. You would be clean.

Thanks for your amazing leap of logic, I've decided i might as well take it, there would be no complications whatsoever in coming back and I'd be getting an awesome education. For those like kingsam and the rest you might wanna check out doing something like this, even the older dreamers, look into Australia, they want minds like us, they want to win the future. I'm still gonna be checking in on this website, and again if I pissed anyone off with my at times pessimism again I'm sorry, I can be a tad bit too realistic if that's a correct phrase at times. I hope we all get our dreams. But I'm not leaving this forum. Once a dreamer, always a dreamer. Stil surreal though. In a month, I'll be in Australia chilling at the beach learning how to engineer planes.

Amoney3 has it right on the money. It is strange to say,but your opportunity[specific to you] to stay legally in the United States seems much larger abroad than if you are here.I'd recommend seriously going after Australian citizenship[due to some specific visas you can apply for in the US] gain some experience in the field and perhaps you might be back with some of the large aerospace giants here in the US such as Boeing,Lockheed or an airline to sponsor you.
