What's the main diff between the Olympics and the World Cup? I guess what I'm really asking is: if mexico won gold on the Olympics, how likely is it to win the Cup? Isn't there something where professional players cannot compete on the Olympics or something?

To play in the Olympics one needs to be less then 23 years old, so this often means participating nations send in their top U-21 prospects. Mexico isn't likely to win the cup though, first of all the cup is way larger with 32 teams and every nation sending their elite players, something you don't find at the olympics. Secondly, olympic winners have a horrible track record at the world cup. Nigeria won gold in 96 and sparked off hopes it was an emergent football power, hopes that never materialized. And while nations like mexico and nigeria have won, brazil has never gotten gold.
