A few months ago before daca, I applied and received itin. I just got a letter from social security office asking for more info. They want to put my earnings under the itin #. Help! what should I do? I think they think its an actual ss number.

Anybody go through this?

Did you apply for the ITIN from SSA or IRS? WTF does SSA want to put your earnings into a new ITIN??

ITINs are strictly IRS related. In fact, federal tax law explicitly prohibits the IRS from sharing data regarding ITINs with any other federal agency.

They know it's not an SSN because it begins with 9, which is reserved for ITINs. Not sure why the SSA would even ask you this. ITINs explicity do not constitute eligibility to work, nor does it grant any Social Security benefits.

If you're working, presumably you are with a "false SSN". Generally, when you file your taxes and the SSA cannot verify your identity, they'll place your earnings in what's called an "ESF", Earnings Suspense File. They spend a lot of time trying to match identities throughout the year, and this letter could be just that -- telling you there's a discrepancy in your file. They usually just want to confirm your identity.

This is the ONLY thing I can think of why the SSA would even contact you.

That seems to make sense. So what should I do? Write back or ignore letter?
