Ok here's a little story:
I live in NM, and here, lawyers ARE REALLY EXPENSIVE. When deferred action came out, I called a bunch of them, and the cheapest I could find was charging $1600 including the filing fee.
Needless to say, I was like f it, I'm going to file myself, like a bunch of other dreamers. So I did, gathered all my stuff together. I felt pretty confident, read all instructions, threads, and I am pretty well informed about immigration laws in general, but I still had that little doubt in my head saying, well I'm not a lawyer, and what if I do something wrong? What ifs filled my head, but I can't afford that. So I called a lawyers to see if he/she could review my work per hour. She charged me $200 to tell me that everything looked good, HOWEVER, she'd recommend waiting till the election, because you never know what can happen. Honestly, I felt like I knew so much more than she did about DACA. Is it C33? Let me look it up, I was like what? Yes, it is C33! Needless to say, I hesitated for like a month, and seeing everyone with similar situations/backgrounds to mine, I decided to finally send it. So I did. Waiting for biometrics now.

I've heard so many things from other dreamers that lawyers or people have told them to put down, among other things their DACA apps.

What's the silliest/most absurd, crazy, unbelievable thing you've heard?

That we shouldn't file on our own because we might not do the application correctly and need a lawyer. I thought 500 bucks to filll out was crazy now 1600 bucks that ridiculous. Really only need a lawyer if you have a criminal history aside from that nah.

Heard about a lawyer addressing a roomful of people in one of the events which members of an organization I work with where presenting tell the room full of people that Illinois does not have instate tuition if you are undocumented. (We've had it for a long while, we have even managed to pass the Illinois dream act not too long ago)

I have also heard if other lawyers claiming this is the dream act and of course many that where starting to charge even before the application was released to have the application ready early.

And as a recognizable organization in this field we have received numerous e-mails from lawyers advertising their "low cost" services which are really astronomically priced when they are not even located in the same state.

And of course I have heard numerous iterations of this being legalization, the dream act, even citizenship from parents and even potential applicants.

During one event that I attended there was a Christian non-profit organization that was going to help people apply, of course they had to get their FBI background before even sending the application (~ 2 month process) and presenting the daca application they made numerous mistakes in describing the application, in describing the process and even describing what this offered applicants.
