Wow... I don't know where to begin!!! Before telling my story, I just want to say how awesome it is to be able to share such an important part of my life with other dreamers. This site rocks!!!

I am Colombian, 22 years old and reside in Kissimmee, FL. My mother brought me to the U.S. at the age of 9 seeking a better future not just for me but her as well. Times got tough after 911 and I found myself having to grow up faster than I should've. I never struggled in school because I loved it. When I got to high school I became part of the Army ROTC program and did all four years with hopes of joining the armed forces as soon as I graduated. My dreams shattered the day I realized I couldn't serve the country I love so much just because I didn't have a SS. Right after graduation I found work at an ALF(Assisted Living Facility). At first it was hard to cope with the fact that this was my present because I had to do some things that no kid should. I was bathing 13 seniors daily, feeding them, cleaning the facility and so much more. Some nights I would cry myself to sleep asking if this was all worth my time.

The Dream Act getting no opportunity to advance and become a reality was horrific for me. I'm sure a lot of other dreamers felt the same way I did. After this I just kept my mind focused at work and making money to support my mom, which by that time was struggling between jobs. School or the military were always on my mind, but I worked as a live-in and my boss wouldn't be flexible with me so I could go to campus. My paycheck was for rent, food, and my mom's medication(she suffers from diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure). One day I met the one person that has got me through it all... That's my wife Gem. Yes, I am gay. She never hesitated and has gone above and beyond to help me cope with the stress I would feel about my situation. We all know that sometimes its hard to get through the days knowing you're limited.

Her and I took a long drive to New York in September of last year and got married. That was probably the happiest day of my life... Knowing I had found my soul mate, someone I could lean on no matter what happens the day of tomorrow.

When I found out about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals my heart dropped. I didn't really know how to feel about the whole thing... All I could do was cry. By this point, my mother had gone back to Colombia and one thing I will always wish I could do is go back to that day to just feel the warmth of my mom's embrace... Those months I had to wait to apply were the longest ones... But when I finally got to fill out those forms, I couldn't be more ecstatic. I applied on August 18th and received the response for the biometrics to be taken on September 21st... I waited for what seemed to be an eternity, but got my work permit on October 17th... Today, October 19th I went to the Social Security Card Center in Orlando and applied for my SS. I am more than happy about this... I don't think I can even explain how good it feels to be free... FREE. Thanks for taking the time to read my story... It means a lot.
