I am asking this because i recently went to open my first bank account at CHASE.

During the whole setup process one of the things the guy asked me was what status i was. I asked if this was necessary in order to open a bank account, he said yes because he was trying to figure out what kind of taxes i would be filing.

He mentioned something about filing w9's or something like that.

So the question is, is there a special name for the type of taxes we will be filing?

Same as everyone else....Federal Income Tax Return for Individuals. Sometimes for business and sometimes state and local income taxes as well.

Why is no one looking into joining a credit union???

Which credit union do you recommend. Here in IL, Chase, Bank of America and the other mainstream banks are now charging monthly service fees for checking accounts if you do not have direct deposit.

Are there any good credit unions who offer free checking with free online banking?

I wouldn't be able to recommend one in your area, sorry. :/

But you should visit: http://www.ncua.gov/NCUAMapping/Page...OVMapping.aspx

^Sorry I realized I copied the wrong url.

I believe credit unions are better than banks but it all depends on the individual and the credit union.

Yea I've been researching on banks because I want to open an account soon. I'm most likely going with a credit union though.

hmm..that is a tricky one because we are still undocumented. DACA does not change our legal status.

When I opened an account with Bank of America, they didn't ask any question. They just wanted two form of picture IDs to open an account. And I always have more than enough balance, so I don't get charged any monthly fee.

They have also issued credit cards to me with my ITIN. It's a very friendly bank. They have never asked for my SSN, immigration status, or tax questions.

You can open an account with your ITIN at some banks. I have a bank account for over 7 years now using my ITIN number. Some banks do not care about your status.
