Hi everyone after you received your EAD in the mail. Do you then schedule
an appointment to your nearest social security office, or do they just allow walk ins?
I received my EAD 10/31/2012 & I'm planning on going down to the Social Security office
In Rockville Maryland, next week to apply for my social.

Walk in is fine. Although it may depend location to location. Call and check that particular office just to be sure.

Yes, walk ins are okay, and its mostly what other people do. Imagine getting all the old people to do something online, or call ahead...

Anyways, I walked in, however, they close very early at 3:30.

Good luck.

I'm a Marylander as well. I walked in after getting my EAD and the social came in the mail. It helps if you've already filled out the form, the SS-5 (Application for Social Security), it reduces your wait time.

Mine's came in a week after I went to the Social Security Office. Now I'm going to the MVA to get my ID.

You need your EAD, your passport (valid passport), and the DHS letter and that's it. Take the DHS letter with you.

We get it for two years and we gotta renew the EAD before the two years are up. I don't believe the SSN will change.

On your ss card it will read "Valid for employment only with DHS authorization". Basically saying that if your ead is expired you cannot be employed.

However, you can continue to use the number for credit, background checks, etc. It is your number for life. You just won't be able to get a job...

Question for those that got their SS card:

In the SS5 form, did you fill out your father's name and mother's name?
Or did you leave their name and social security blank and checkmarked "Unknown?"

Thanks.
