I am a student (unemployed). I commute to school and currently live with parents.
I walked into Macy's the other day to open a macy's card...and was rejected possibly due to the fact that our household income isn't very high.
If I can't even get a Macy's card to establish credit, how will I ever open a visa or amex?
Do you suggest I wait until I get a job? What should I do?

You can't even get a Macy's card? I don't think Macy's gives them out like hot cakes, especially if you have no income -.-

You gotta work your way up. Try applying at a jewelry store

I know Capital One preys on college students with no credit history, so you might want to try them. Or try a pre paid credit card that affects your credit.

Well, how are you going to apply for a credit card when you dont have a job to pay it off? I think thats the issue with these
Companies most of the time. Its best to open a bank account when you get a job and put in a little money and then the bank itself will offer you credit cards.

Yeah, every year a capital one rep. Would come to our college giving out credit cards for "free" and you get a keychain flash light or a mug if you sign up..... Lol

And btw Macys's is no walmart. You gotta have a pretty thick wallet to shop there. I love macy's but I def cant afford it. Just curious, why do you want a macy's credit card for?

Macy's credit card is a good way to build credit. We shop there often.
I don't think we will have a problem paying off balances in full.

Don't waste your time getting a department credit card, you'd be better off getting 1 or 2 BANK credit cards later on. Get a secured credit card first, after a year you'll have built enough credit to apply for an unsecured credit card. You'll have all the big bank companies mailing you asking you to open an account with them.

It's not just for myself. It's for other people in my family. We shop there since it's close by. AND BTW, they never asked if I had a job. they only asked for income.
