In the state of Maryland & so many other states, we can get a state I'd & drivers license. The real I'd act is coming into effect January 15, 2013 in the state of Maryland. With our socials & work permits will we be eligible for the new I'd act? It is federal issued by the homeland security.

DHS doesn't issue Driver's License or State ID. If your state becomes fully compliant with Real ID act, it simply means the expiration date of your State ID or Driver's License will match the expiration date of your EAD. Oh, and your card will also say it's 'temporary', 'limited term', or something to that effect.

If you state doesn't print Temporary and 2 years expiration date in the card, I would get a car ASAP before the real ID takes place. If you live in states that offer ID/DL you should renew your card asap

What the hell...so when this act (which has significant opposition from both major parties) takes into effect, how the hell are we supposed to travel domestically?

I think January 2013

Pretty much make it harder to get a DL/ID or Renew it

I wonder how Washington and the other states who still give DL/ID will handle this

OP,

Maryland grants "Limited Term Temporary" documents (IDs and DLs that expire when your EAD term expires) now as part as making compliance with the Real ID act. This has been going on since April 19,2009 in MD. The January deadline is a deadline of compliance for states, so in Maryland, nothing really will change and I imagine other states already have guidelines instituted to comply with the law.

The Real ID act is a federal law so ALL states have to come to compliance.
