Hello everyone,

I've ignored DACA to long, So here I am asking for help. I have no clue on what to do first. Should I talk to a lawyer? I'm sort of broke but I can find the money so how. How expensive are lawyers? I live in Oregon. So I've been a good boy, I arrived here when I was 2years old and went to school and graduated from high school. It's been a year since I've been to college due to finances. I only got a speeding ticket and paid it off.

So what are my first steps to apply for this? I can't wait any longer this DACA can close anytime soon????

I found this lawyer

PLEASE HELP ME

I would strongly advice contacting a local immigrant organization for referrals to lawyers that are known to be good.

Simply searching for the first lawyer that you see online or on t.v. is perhaps the worst idea, I have seen horrible lawyers that should really be tried as criminals advertising on those sources as if they where the best in the industry and promising services that should really be highly illegal. If you do not only anyone else from the area that can recommend you a lawyer, the best bet would be a local organization, if you cannot find any, my recommendation goes to NIJC:

http://www.immigrantjustice.org/DREAMers#Legal help

NIJC is the National Immigrant Justice Center, they are based in Illinois but have been working with various law firms and may have contact information for lawyers in different states, I have personally worked with them and they where responsible for providing the legal representation at Navy Pier and are partly responsible for dreamrelief.org

I do believe that they have been trying to develop some method of advising people for a low fixed cost of $50, they are a non-profit and if you cannot pay those cost they are willing to charge on a sliding scale based on your income.

good luck.

Well I talked to a lawyer and they are charging a flat fee of 750 to fill out and file the DACA application! So what should I do?

I heard the DACA app is $300 is that true?

The application for DACA (Form I-821D) is free. The fee for the application for your Employment Authorization Card (Form I-765 and I-765WS), which has to be filed along with the DACA application, and biometrics is $465. ($380 for the I-765, and $85 for the biometrics).

In my opinion, $750 is incredibly steep. But this is your livelihood and only you can make the ultimate decision of whether or not to hire a lawyer.

You really only need a lawyer if you have some sort of special complications with your case, for example, if you where charged of a crime, or something of that order that could become an obstacle.

Otherwise, there really is no need for a lawyer other than to check your paperwork to ensure it is correctly filled and you have the right amount of information.

You could fill out the application, its easy enough, and people on this forum have answered up to the most miniscule detail of each question, after you fill out the application and gather all the proof, you can contact a lawyer to check it for you, they might charge between 50-100 or maybe even do it for free, but it would be better for you in the long run.

The best bet if for you to get in contact with someone from the same state that may be aware or be part of a local organization that works with immigrants, they might be able to refer you to a low cost and trustworthy lawyer.

Some organizations also have a growing list of bad lawyers you should avoid at all costs, which is why I am always very critical of anyone you just find by yourself.

When my parents did their petition they went to over a dozen lawyers, and most of them just gave them bad advice, had the followed the advice of some of the lawyers they would have been deported and not be able to return to this country for 10 years, it was a petition as an over stay and some where adamant they had to leave, which is not at all true. Just keep in mind that some lawyers are not great, and some lawyers have messed up people's applications already while collecting extravagant fees.

A lot of people have done their cases on their own or with local community help and they have had no problems being approved. I strongly suggest you do it yourself, there is really no need for a lawyer, especially if your case is simple like it seems it is. Working with a lawyer doesn't guarantee approval at all so if that's your reason to do it, might want to think it over. Use the money to pay the application fee instead.

If your case is simple, there are no complications I completely agree with this and add real life examples.

So far I have seen a lot of people denied or receiving RFE that did their stuff through a lawyer. Ultimately, we are more knowledgeable about our own immigration status than some of the lawyers that are out there, and the information that has been amassed through this forum is significant enough that it should help anyone wanting to apply by themselves a step by step guide on how to do it.

Frankly, the first people that where being accepted where probably members of this forum because the information went around fast.

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with being able to apply yourself or not.
