What number did you use? First call your credit card company regarding the change and let them know you have a social security number. They won't ask you about the previous number. One of my company's updated it immediately and the other one asked me to fax in copy of SSN, state ID, and a utility bill with my address. Cap One is a bitch. Their fax machines didn't read my SSN and state ID properly. So I had to mail them the documents. Meanwhile, they restricted my account for no reason.

i'm having trouble with cap one. i sent them a copy of my bank statement, id and ssc and they called back saying my bank won't verify my address and identity without my debit card #. even though i haven't yet updated my ssn with my bank, this all seems a bit sketchy...

I had same issue with Chase. I ended up closing my account since they won't proceed with changing your SSN without proof of the old number. I've managed to change every other lender (Amex, Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, Express) & after only 2 months of having my SSN updated with credit bureaus & lenders, I applied and got approved for a Discover Credit Card. I wouldn't go through the hassle with Chase. However, after closing the account they did send a letter verifying the SSN update but they would not reopen my account.
