So I'm 17 and currently attend high school, I applied for DACA and was approved on 11/18. Once approved, my father whose undocumented, accompanied me to apply for a social security number. The S.S asked if he was my father, I said yes and he told me that since i was under 18 my father had to show his I.D for me to apply for a ss number, then that was the problem because he showed an expired ID from the State of California and the ss told him that he needed a valid I.D for him(the ss worker) to process the request but my dad can't do that since he's undocumented and he only has his mexican matricula I.D. and didn't want to show him that card for fear that he might get arrested and deported so is there another way to deal with this problem . Thank you.

You can try going to another Social Security Office. The workers at the SS Office can't call arrest or detain your dad (even if they called ICE, they wouldn't get far because they're after criminals and security threats). He should be able to show his matricula ID. IF.. They don't accept that, he can show a Passport.

i would print out the DACA flyer that is on the SSA website and take it with you when you apply for the SSN. no where on it says that your parent has to have a valid ID when you apply for the SSN.

O.K thanks I printed that sheet out hope it helps, I'm also thinking of just going alone to the ss office without my parents, and do you reccomend that I sign the s.s application or my parents if I'm under age.

Just tell him to take his passport with him, it's a valid form of ID.

for sure. i would print out the app and have it already filled out (if you already dont) and take that with you as well.

this is what you should do when you get to the SSA office

when i went i had the app already printed out and filled out and got to the office. took a number, waited for your number to be called. whenyou get to the window, tell them that you need to apply for a SSN becauseyou were approved under the Deferred Action.

take your EAD and as must evidence to prove your identity. usually your passport works if you have one.

good luck and let me know how it goes!

This is so funny

@mvhs951, I went with my cousin last week who is 15, i'm 19 and they didn't ask for anything but the ead and proof of identity of my cousin, so try again at a different office or someone else. They didn't even care about his age. the whole process minus the wait was only like 5 minutes.
