So I just received my new SSN through deferred action...

Before deferred action, I was using my ITIN number to start building a credit history. After receiving a SSN I called the banks I have credit cards with and updated my information (no issues there).

Today, I called Equifax (one of the credit report agencies) and asked them to transfer/merge my ITIN credit history to my SSN (I heard that this is possible). However, they told me that they cannot transfer my ITIN history because I have a temporary SSN (according to her, the SSN we receive through the worker’s permit is temporary and should not be used to build credit; althought credit card companies allow it).

What??? Is the SSN we receive through deferred action a temporary number? Do permanent residents receive a different number? This does not make any sense to me. Everyone has been saying that we can use the SSN for everything besides obtaining federal benefits.

The representative also told me that, once I get a permanent SSN I’ll have three credit histories (e.g. ITIN, Worker’s SSN, and Permanent SSN), and they will never merge! She said that several people have been calling about this. Is this woman crazy?

Is there any way to merge my ITIN history to my SSN? Is it illegal to use my SSN to apply for credit cards, loans, etc…?

No they're wrong, SSN is forever, no matter what type...

Send a letter instead, copies of the new SSN and say what your old ITIN number was.

The number is forever, but once I become a permanent resident will I receive another SSN? or will I always use this one?

Yeah she doesn't know what she was talking about, there's a thread on here called transferring credit history or something along those lines, it tells you what to do and what to send.

you should call again and report whoever was talking to you, they are misinforming and that is very dangerous, you don't know how many people talked to them.
