I am paying out of state tuition at a community college and I just received a 1098-t form with all my information including the last 4 digits of my social. The issue is, I DON'T have a social, so where did this number come from? Thanks for everyone's help.

In my case, NY have been issuing a thing call "student id number" to all those who lack a SSN. It will be put in any form that require a ssn, infact many form (school exams) that has "SSN/Student ID". I had this number since Elementary school and is in all my records.

I don't know if this is only NY or federal.

It starts with 959-xx-xxxx

Aye, there are a few ranges of SSNs which are never valid and that can be used by an institution to give you a number in lieu of a real SSN.

ie: 000, 666, etc.

The same thing happened to me a few years back at my community college. I received some form with the last 4 digits of my "SSN". Since I didn't have a SSN they assigned me some random number. The only problem was that it wasn't an ID number at first. Someone somewhere there assigned me a number that looked just like an SSN. When I went to correct it, I got bitched out by some republicunt bitch. She said I could face jail time for using a fake SSN and that I better have the card as evidence that it was assigned to me. I was like look bitch I didn't assign myself this number the school did. Her boss told her to calm down and then she pulled up the paperwork I filled out when I registered. I had left the SSN part blank and when she pulled it up it had a number in red ink (I filled the app with black) and it was clearly someone else's handwriting. She crossed it out and assigned me a student ID.

I'd give your school a call and ask what your student ID number is. I doubt they made the same mistake as in my case but it doesn't hurt to make sure. Also, if you've received your SSN you could update your school info.

it's probably the student ID number that the school assigned you. i was assigned a student ID number when i was in college. it's a number the school uses to keeps track of the number of student how either dont have a SSN or dont use their SSN.

I also had one of these numbers while I was in college. When you receive your SSN, I strongly suggest that you notify the school and have them update it.

I am currently doing this so I could amend my taxes for the years I was in school.

If you or anyone else has any questions about the process, feel free to ask.

What will amending the taxes do for me? I didn't earn anything those years and obviously didn't pay any taxes (funded by family).

I paid for school out of my own pocket with some help from family and friends. For the years I was in school, there was a tax credit for people putting themselves through school without government aid. I'm amending my taxes to take advantage of those tax credits.

I also made money during those years via a small business I started with my ITIN#. I already paid taxes on that money, but since I was unable to use my ITIN# for school, I will have to amend my taxes now that I have a SSN and updated 1098-Ts for those years.

I don't know your situation, but you may be able to take advantage of similar tax credits. It wouldn't hurt to look into it.
