Should I wait for my DACA approval to take the nursing boards (NCLEX) or not?

Hi guys, my 6th month mark is on the 27th of February and I graduated from nursing school mid-December of last year (2012).

In order to take the board exams for nursing, I need to go through a series of applications including fingerprinting and applying at my state board of nursing (Nevada). This process takes a little more than a few weeks. There's a part in the app where they ask you for your citizenship status. Also, I do have a history of being detained for my immigration status. NOT a criminal act.

I don't want to wait any longer because I'm afraid I'm going to slowly lose my knowledge the longer I wait to take the exam. But if I do wait, at least if they question my status I can tell them I've been approved to legally stay here and work.

Do you or anyone you know have had a similar experience? Or care to share your thoughts on the subject?

Thanks guys.

I don't have a Social Security number. When will I receive my Nevada license?
Under Nevada law, the Board cannot issue you a temporary or permanent license/certificate without a US Social Security number (SSN). If you have passed the NCLEX but do not have a SSN, your exam results are retained indefinitely. You may be required to submit a new application if your previous application has expired. Applications are valid for one year, after which you will need to submit a new application, fee, and fingerprints.
Sounds like you're okay to go?

Are you DACA approved?
If.youre not yet, I suggest apply NCLEX where citizenship or SSN is not an issue. I, myself applied my RN in New Mexico... then.when I got my SSN, I applied for reciprocity in CA.

MSG if you have more questions. You should .fine though.

Hi. I'm a graduate nurse December 2011 in NY. I was really discouraged because DACA wasn't even an option at the time. Yes, I could've taken my NCLEX immediately because you CAN take it without your SS #. However, I did not and would not put false information on the citizenship status question.

I was approved for DACA and I'm taking my NCLEX in 2 weeks. Yes, it is a bit harder to study / review because it's been over a year since I graduated but it's not impossible. I know another dreamer from here that's been out of school way longer. He was approved as well and will be taking his NCLEX soon. Don't lose hope. Just look over your materials here and there. I definitely wish I did.

You're on your 6 month mark. It means you're closer now than you ever were. I really hope this helps!

Not yet, but I do have a valid SSN my mom got me wen I was younger. It's under my name. I'm just worried that they question my foreign passport when I take my fingerprinting or on the day of my NCLEX and won't accept it. I appreciate the reply!

Glad to know there are others out there. And with a much longer wait time! You guys are my inspiration, haha. I definitely haven't lost hope but it's also hard to see all your classmates move on. While we're still waiting. But I have regained new hope!

After over a year of finishing nursing school, I'm going to apply for my NCLEX finally in CA. I decided to wait and hope for change. Then DACA came and I got approved and now I'm eligible to take it. My problem is that my legal name is not the same one as the one I use for my school. I have 4 now and I used to have 3. My school is giving me a hard time over changing my name. I have to send my transcripts with my new legal name to the Nursing board to allow me to take it. I'm going in person this week. Wish me luck. I want to be an RN so much.

Good luck and i hope everything works out for you!

Still waiting for my approval. Going on 10 months tomorrow. I'm actually about to go study and do some practice questions. How often would you study during your time off of school? It's scary how long its been since i graduated. Hopefully information will remain in my brain. Let me know how your exams go!
