Just got off the phone with Discover's customer service. I tried to apply for their student credit card with my SSN but the lady said they can't move forward with the application because there is another SSN on my file according to TransUnion's credit report. I suspect this is because I tried to buy a phone about a year ago and since they needed to run a credit check I put in my father's SSN (in retrospect this was a terrible decision). She said I should try calling TransUnion and fixing this problem but I'm a bit paranoid about what they'll ask when they see a totally different number on my file. Has anyone else gone through something similar? Thoughts?

You won't have a problem. Just tell them they have the wrong social security on your file. They'll probably ask you for a copy of your social security card but that's about it.

I spent about an hour looking up "SSN variations" and your advice seems similar to what others were suggesting. I'm just worried they'll ask for a copy of the old SSN or something like that. Gonna try giving them a call tomorrow and see how it goes.

Just tell them you don't have the old SSN because it was a mistake.

What I've realized is that in order to completely start fresh with a whole new credit history is to use a different address when applying. Several people on here have applied for credit with their new social and their old info keeps on coming up even tho it's ran with a different social, but name, birth date are the same. Try that.
