Opinion on guest worker program?

The amendment was kept today by the senate http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070522/...ss_immigration. I think its a good thing, but i also think that many guest workers should have a shot at citizenship.

It should be slashed to 200,000 otherwise the bill will not pass. 28 democrats voted for it.

It should be completely cut out I just don't think this guest worker program will benefit the chances of the bill passing.

So you encourage more illegall immigration? because if this doesnt exist, and family ties are not given priority anymore, people have no way of immigrating here legally.

Not exactly but from what I seen in the news is that the Democrats are the ones opposing the bill now (specifically the guest worker program). Better yet why don't they setup the guest worker program as a trigger. For example once they fix the internal problem (us by granting us visa or probation cards or whatever) and securing the border by building their fence/increasing the man power at both borders then the guest worker program should take effect.
I seriously believe this plan will create an underclass of workers with little to no rights.

If the amendment had passed the senators that built the bill would have stopped supporting it.. and I don't think that a bill that is not supported by those guys would have a chance to pass, so it has more chances of passing this way. The program has a trigger and protects the guest workers under the current labor laws so they would have THE SAME rights as workers as an American, that way terminating exploitation. and those people wouldn't be a permanent underclass for they would work for two years or less (because they don't HAVE to stay for the two years) then take the money they saved back home, starting businesses and building houses back in our countries. I think it works just fine, only thing is that I think the cap is too big, 400,000 a year is just too many, even though after the process the employers have to go through to get a temporary worker, I don't think that the cap would be met even if it was lowered to 200,000, because this is not counting Agriculture workers... so I think it was a good thing the amendment didn't pass.

The lower the numbers of guest worker the greater chance for it to pass.

the guest worker program is part of the "grand bargain" struck between bipartisan coalition of senators. if you strike out any of its major provisions like the guest worker program, which by the way is strongly advocated by president bush, you will not have a bill with its original sponsors and you end up breaking the coalition apart.

you want that to happen? where do you guys come up with the idea that the bill will have less chance of passing if the guest worker program is not written off? those 20-or so democrats who voted aye such as boxer and clinton will ultimately support the final legislation but right now they are also trying to vote on amendments that benefit the lower class americans
