hello everyone,

I've been a long time lurker here and I wanted to know what you guys would do if you were in the same situation as me.

Right now I'm a senior in college and I've been looking for jobs to apply for once I graduate. I applied for DACA in November but I haven't been approved yet. I found my dream job in the college career website but I know I won't be able to get it since I don't have my work permit. Should I tell them about my situation? I was thinking of asking for an internship and then asking them if I could get the job once I get my work permit? Would that be unprofessional? and how would I subtly slip that info in conversation?
Perhaps I'm overthinking it...

BTW the job is for a research assistant at NYU it it matters.

Its worth shot explaining the situation, when I was done with school, a recruited came to me with a job offer, I told him I was just waiting for my work application to be approved, and 6 six months later I email him and got a job.

The trick is discretion, by law, they cannot hire you with out being legally allowed to work. So what you can do maybe is yeah just ask for an unpaid intership, and hope you get to know them enough to explain the situation later on. But mostly I would just inter with them if possible, unpaid for the time being just for the experience.

Best of luck!

I am third year student here in California. I applied for internships earlier this semester and received a few offers and, at the time, I did not have my permit yet (I also applied in November). Thankfully, I received the employment authorization card right before the deadline to accept the offer I wanted.

Here is what I think about your situation. If the internship is paid, you will not get it if you do not have a permit. In jobs that require no higher education, such as in fast food, it is easy to obtain a job because in most cases they don't really care if you can work legally or not since you are easily replaceable if an issue arises with the government. However, in your case, since it is probably a skilled job, the company you applied for most likely is looking for valuable long term employees, which means they will be more careful about who they hire. This means you will need a valid social security number for background checks they may perform and also your permit on the first day on the job when you fill out the employment forms.

The way I see it, if you think you should be receiving the permit soon, wait it out a little until you can't anymore. If the deadline to accept/decline the offer comes and you still don't have the permit, ask for an unpaid internship and explain your situation. You have to be really careful about you say. Make sure you make it clear that you will be able to renew the authorization indefinitely and will not need sponsorship from the company.
