The approval notices generally arrive within 1-2 days of the permit, usually before it. You can obtain a SSN with the Work Permit and Passport only, they don't need nor want the approval notices.

The approval letters usually arrive first. I'd give it a week before calling USCIS if they don't arrive by then.

You don't need the approval letters to apply for an SSN. Just take your EAD and Passport or Birth Certificate.

Just to be safe take all 3. I was only gonna take my passport and EAD when getting my social but the lady requested my birth certificate and the EAD. She didn't even looked at my passport.

Does the birth certificate need to be translated?

They told me they'd translate it for me. And that it'll only take 1-2 days.

They do their own translation. They don't want others translation. Both times I've gone, the person helping me spoke Spanish, so it was fast.

Okay so I went on Monday to the SS Office, I took my passport, EAD and Birth Certificate JUST IN CASE. I legit waited 2 hours in line. Finally got called went in took about 5 mins, I said hi im here to apply for a ss #, she asked for my EAD, passport, and birth certificate and the application you fill out prior if you printed it offline or they have them there for you to fill out as you wait to be called. Handed them to her, she pretty much just wrote down all the info, printed a piece of a paper asked me to review it to make sure everything was correct on it gave it back to her, then she printed a copy saying in about 2 weeks i would be gettin my ss card in the mail.

Now as far as receiving my approval letters..NOTHING YET...but i called uscis and asked why I haven't gotten them she pretty much said i had to wait 30 days to receive it since they mailed it out on a NON-business day. Im like okay???? so i should call back in 30 days if i havent recieved anything and she said yes. so i hope i get them asap seeing how i gotta go show this as proof at the college im trying to enroll in
