as soon as my EAD was approved and i had my SS# i spit out a torrent of apps and got 3 offers. i was offered a warehouse position, prep cook, and cashier. i decided on cashier because i thought that it would help me in getting a good reference as a honest and trustworthy person.

i was hired as a cashier/checker in a grocery store, i met some awesome people on the checking team, super nice supervisors, and made friends with some of the baggers/courtesy clerks - i was really enjoying it. 1 week into it the dairy clerk of the store quits his job and i was approached to help fill in his hours, i said sure i'll help until you guys find someone else. my schedule changes to checking/dairy/checking/dairy, i had no problems with this since i was still part of the checking team.

2 weeks after being employed, i get my new schedule for the rest of the month: 44 hours a week with 1 day off as a dairy clerk, ZERO hours as a checker. on this same schedule i see that a cute girl bagger/courtesy was scheduled to be trained as a cashier. so what do I think at this point? that i was just conned out of my job as a checker and put in a fridge at 40 degrees celcius for 8 hours a day.

i spoke with my manager and ask what's going on, was i not hired as a checker? why do i have zero hours as a checker and why am i in a fridge for the rest of the month? manager's answer was: you either do it, or we 'cut our losses.' i finish my shift, tell the manager i quit and the manager said 'thanks a lot, for not even giving a 2 weeks notice'?????? SERIOUSLY? they scammed me out of my job and wanted the courtesy of a 2 weeks notice? i'm wondering if they would have pulled this type of shit on someone with a last name SMITH.

anyways, i'm venting and asking you guys if you would have done the same? am i too proud/stubborn?

take it easy.

They were deceptive, fuck them. It's a labor job, you can find those everywhere. Remember, you are being paid for providing your services. The biggest mistake people make is thinking that it's a privilege working for someone else. It is not.

minimum wage no benefits. so if i fell ill going in and out of the 40 degrees fridge i was on my own.

and as not_today mentioned, my reasoning was that for minimum wage i could find a hundred of these jobs and probably be hired by someone who would straight up tell me what would my working conditions be. i don't understand why the manager tried to salvage a cashier to take up the position full time, rather than hire someone specifically for the job.

It depends. My bro worked at a grocery store and I know that math is not his forte. How did you perform as a cashier?? He ended up in the deli where you only occasionally cashier. Plus sometimes they want you to try different departments so you know how the store works and need to fill in some place when they are short on staff. Next time asks how the dynamics of a place work and if you will ever have to learn other positions.

I only remember taking down the question mark and making it one sentence after the word deli. Where? I have how in two spots but I don't remember messing with them.
