Hello all,

I just got approved for advance parole to study abroad in Germany this fall!!!! Beyond happy, I've been waiting for a long time to hear this news!! I sent my application 2/21 and just received my approval document today, 5/13.

For those wondering what I sent in -
In addition to Forms G-1145 and I-131, a copy of I-821D and I-765 approvals, a copy of my EAD card, social security card, passport identification page, 2 passport-sized photos, and money order of $360 made payable to U.S. Department of Homeland Security, I sent in the following supporting evidence:

A letter explaining my educational reason for requesting advance parole, provisional acceptance letter from the university's faculty director of the exchange program, the study abroad program brochure, and a copy of my student page showing that I am a political science and German double major.

BEST NEWS EVER!!!

Congrats!!

Do you think the fact that you're majoring in German helped you? How much will the trip cost? Also how are you gonna pay for it? Did you save it?

Thanks! I'm studying abroad from September 2013 - January 2014.

YouMaySayImADreamer - Good luck with your application! You'll hear back in about 3 months

Lunafiv - I think majoring in German was a plus in my case, but you can probably study abroad for other reasons. The program is through my school, and it's considered an exchange program, so tuition is about the same as what I'm currently paying. I pay for school through Sallie Mae's Smart Option Loan (by signing with a co-signer); the additional expenses would be flight, living expenses, and spending money when I get there. I'm working full-time this summer to save up as well.

May I ask how old are you? Have there been any news in regards to what happens to the 3-10 year bar? Anyone left and got back in?

It be great if I could visit the few remaining living people in my family before they die. Could easily prove their bad health, just afraid of that 10 year bar. Especially with immigration reform being so close.

Though on the other hand... once they die, they are dead, forever. Tough choice.

The 3-10 year ban does not actually play a role when you leave and enter with the "advanced parole". This is exactly the reason why the document is referred to as "advanced parole" because the DHS grants you an advanced permission to re-enter, regardless of your previous unlawful status.

"The Board of Immigration Appeals recently held that persons issued an advance parole document, who have accrued unlawful presence in the United States, will not be deemed inadmissible for unlawful presence upon return to the United States."

However, if there are other reasons for your possible inadmissibility then : "...non-citizens with old drug convictions can be detained at the airport, and placed in immigration detention, despite [being granted Advanced Parole]."
