Just curious. Some hot hot analyst told me that undocumented workers who were high skill workers in their country of origin came to the USA and got lousy first jobs. Still, their kids had a higher likehood of going to college and getting a degree. As you know, my parents are farm workers. They were not high skill workers in Mexico. I consider them high skill but techinically they are not. So what about you? Where your parents high skill workers in their country of origin? Did they became high skills workers in the USA?

My mom had a 4 year degree in accounting, and she had her own businesses. My dad did 2 years of college and worked in a bank (not as a teller but in the main offices).

Here, they've had really lousy jobs, but they're proud of their hard work (as they should be).

I can't speak for me personally, but I do know several high skilled workers from Mexico who are working crappy jobs here who I used to work with. One friend was a secretary in Mexico (skilled-ish) and is a dishwasher at a fast food restaurant here. Among her kids are a doctor and a lawyer. Another has a degree in engineering in a Mexican university, speaks English very well, but works as a cook in the same restaurant and does maintenance on the weekends. Not sure about his kids.

My mother has a law degree and used to be judge in a small court, now she works in a little insurance company where she earns little money.

My father has an engineering degree and used to build jet engines, now he works as an engineer for a real estate developer, again earning little money.

All this for their children.

My mom was an executive secretary at a big company in Peru. She's now a housewife and she does small jobs [babysitting, etc] on the side.

My dad was an engineer that worked with the Peruvian Air Force and he actually reached the level of Lieutenant General. He's now working as a delivery guy for a well-known food distributor.

My dad absolutely hates his job right now. He's planning on moving back the second we [his kids] get our LPR.

My parents are the same way... they're tired of having this life, where they can't do anything...

It's weird because growing up no one suspected us of not having a status because my parents are both well educated and middle class. EVERYONE in my extended family has at least a bachelor's and everyone except me in my generation ( in my birth country and here) has a graduate degree. I feel like the loser in the family but they know why I can't go to grad school so most try not to say anything.

I know... all my cousins in Peru are around my age, and they're all in college...
