Do you believe in life forms outside of this world? We were having a discussion in my Astronomy class on Thursday, and we started talking about aliens and extraterrestrial life in the universe. It amazes me how many people still think that we are the only ones in the vast cosmos. Of course the government will never accept it for fear of mass paranoia. But old retired military personnel and former CIA employees are dying off and confessing what they have seen in their years. I firmly believe other life forms exist; there is no way we are the only inhabitants of this great universe. I am greatly fascinated by this subject. Any thoughts?

Also on an unrelated note, there's some cool facts here: http://www.area51newmexico.com/page8.php

I absolutely do. I mean, the universe is endless so we can't be the only ones..

As Mulder would say "I want to believe!" Sorry, big X-Files fan here, haha.

For anyone visiting New York the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History will blow your mind.

As a species that has so far barely reached our moon and haven't even mapped the depths of our own oceans it would be pretty egotistical to think that among the trillions of worlds with often even better conditions for life than our own, ours would be the only one to develop life.

I really doubt aliens have visited earth as in the Roswell conspiracy and so on, and I really think the idea that aliens are some humanoid creatures is rather...earth-centric? lol. Evolution has brought about such a wild amount of diversity in life on this world, and they adapt and change based on their environment. In an alien world, even an earth like one, the environment would be so different that the results would probably blow our mind.

Having said that, I would be surprised if there wasn't some kind of life on another planet. As mentioned, there are countless planets out there that we haven't even seen. While life arising is a statistical aberration, there's plenty of space in the universe for that aberration to have occurred again and again and again. I can't say that the life would be what we call 'intelligent'. It would be seriously awesome if it were, but it could also be in various stages from single celled organisms to whatever...or it could have been evolving on that planet for hundreds of millions of years longer than we have and still not have achieved what we would call personhood. Even if all we fine is the equivalent of extra terrestrial plankton, I would love it.

Seriously, space is one of my favorite things to think about. I know it's impractical to put the money that we do into NASA and so on, and that perhaps it will never come to anything, but the thought that it would? Damn... I wonder what would happen if space travel were opened up to the average person, or at least to more than just government personnel. Would we have gone farther?

lmao. Can you tell that I've thought about all this?

^Perhaps life is actually the norm, we just don't know about it. Our sample is so small we just can't draw any conclusions about anything. For all we know Europa has life. I also don't believe in humanoid little green men or that sort of dumb shit but it seems to me like all life on Earth always moved towards certain common features so it's not unreasonable that alien life would have limbs or some kind of message processing organ.

BTW, NASA funding is important. People don't realize what a wealth of technologies came from our exploration of space. Even if it wasn't for that the amount of inspiration and mystery it produces is well worth the bucks.
