Hello! My name is Justin. I really support this bill. I used to see the whole immigration thing as a black and white issue. I would think, "illegal is illegal...get 'em out"
It's a harsh point of view. I moved to Los Angeles (I currently live in Texas) about 8 years ago. I was originally from the whitest (statistically true) county in California. So I never really met that many people that weren't white. Being in LA, I met all sorts of people. I made friends with some Hispanic people, got to know them really well. I was shocked to find out that some of these people were, in fact, illegal. They didn't have accents! They graduated from high school! They seemed like normal everyday young people. Latin, yes. But certainly not "illegal". I began to explore the issue alot more. I was even more shocked when I found out that there is no way for them to become "legal". There is not path, short of marriage, but even that is not a sure thing, with the whole I-601 waiver process. Anyway, it changed me. I realized that the whole immigration issue is not a black and white issue. There are many shades of gray. I could see no reason why my friends shouldn't be allowed to just be normalized so they could move on with their lives. "Send 'em back", I used to think? Back to what? My friends barely remembered where they were from. Who would they live with? Culturally, they are American.
It just really seemed to me like an injustice. This country has played dumb to the extent of illegal immigration. Businesses and industry have benefited from the labor. It was part of the expansion of the economy. The government knew this. It's even a federal law that the children of illegal immigrants must not be denied education benefits in public schools. Public schools! This is where American culture is propagated. It's unreal. I believe the immigration system needs an overhaul. And I'm not impressed with the way the large immigration rallies were handled. (You all need a good P.R. person for that stuff...i.e. not waving foreign flags...you lose Joe Sixpack in Texas, Iowa, and Georgia when you do that) But I have to say, the DREAM Act makes incredible sense to me. It's the compassionate thing to do. It's the fiscally responsible thing to do since we've already spent billions of dollars on the education of the target population. Why squander that investment? It's the pro-American thing to do. It will provide an educated workforce to expand the tax base and possibly bolster the military ranks.

Anyway, I'm with you. I may not agree with everything regarding the whole immigration issue, but I'm pretty close. On the DREAM Act, I'm with you 100%. I've made calls and sent email to senators and I will continue to do so.

Hey, I like you already! :P

Anyway, welcome to DAP. My boyfriend used to be the same way, but his views have changed 100% since he's met me. I'm glad you've joined and are helping by making calls, etc.
