I've written letters to the three credit bureaus notifying them of my newly issued SSA card. I've gotten two replies saying they can't do squat since my SS number doesn't match their records...

The thing is, I used a fake SS straight out of high school to apply to a student loan. I wrote to them asking them to update and now they say that they want repayment immediately since the number didn't match.

Anyone have experience with this? Are they going to start going after people for identity fraud? Keep in mind I kept my credit score pretty high (720+) and I'm a good debtor...

If you cant do much about transferring your credit I would just leave the matter alone and just try to build new credit.

Look at it from an outside standpoint:

Some random Joe with absolutely no documentation calls in and says "Hey, that SSN with a great credit score? That's actually me. Please transfer all that information to my name." The workers reply: "Uhh.. do you have any proof that SSN is yours?" Joe replies: "No... I have absolutely no proof."

Even if the credit bureaus would somehow update your credit report with the new SSN. The bank reporting your other social security number would overwrite that the next month. You don't need to contact the credit bureaus to get it updated. That's not how it works.

You need to have the bank(s) update it. Do you have any credit cards? You don't really need to update all your creditors with your new SSN if you can't. A credit report can have multiple SSNs. Such as when you are a co-sponsor or co-applicant on a loan/credit card.

If that creditor really doesn't want to co-operate and some bank in the future asks why there's another SSN on your credit report just claim the above. Though I've had my ITIN and SSN on my credit report for some time and no one asked me anything.

I'm pretty sure that's highly illegal to use a fake SSN to get loans.. That's like identity theft.. That number is someone's and you took out a shut load of money under their SSN... Tisk tisk.. You're lucky you're not in jail, idk why you're worried about transferring squat, be thankful they didn't nail your ass for that one.

100% agree.

If he was using someone else number but using his own name can it still be considered identity fraud?
I mean technically it can be, but you're using all your real data besides the number like countless of people do to work.

Use of a fake SSN is only identity theft if the number belongs to someone and you know who it belongs to. If it doesn't belong to anyone, or it does belong to someone but you have no idea who then it's not.

Anyways, in regards to credit made on a fake SSN, that's pretty much gone. ITIN you can still try to transfer over, but chances are you'll have to start from scratch anyways.

Not trying to be an asshole but lets get this straight. You sent letters notifying the bureaus about your change from the fake SSN to new real SSN? If this is true, you must be totally out of your mind. If someone got a hold of my SSN and did all this I'd be super angry. Be careful. Don't let your SSN see the daylight. Store the card somewhere safe and never provide it anywhere.

You do know that each credit bureau has a toll free number that you can reach them at and most matters can be resolved right then and there. That's not the way you should have approached that issue, you should have gotten professional advice.

But anyway, i had an issue with my dad (we have the same first name and 1st last name 2nd last name is different) and so i was getting all the bad crap he had on his file. I went online and opened up disputes and updated info in it, they have this "consumer message" that you can enable so that when people run your credit by law they have to read that message and make sure everything is in compliance. About 30 days passed by and all of my disputes had been resolved. I thought i had to send letters and what not, but nope, everything can be done online. Of course my case is different than yours, google is your friend.
