Hi! I just bought a car this weekend with my brother on the title since it was my first car purchase I couldn't do it alone. I had to be the co-signer since his credit score was higher than mine in order for us to lower the interest.

On his insurance they want to charge me half my life since I am a first time driver now that I have my license.

My question is (and maybe this is a stupid one) is there a way for them to really know how long I've been driving? They just ask you since when you've been driving and if I say more years can they actually check this info from the DMV? Does any one have a relative or maybe work at an insurance company that can tell me for sure?

Or maybe someone who has taken out insurance recently with their new license?

Please someone let me know! I am in dire need of getting this fixed ASAP!!!

Yes, they can put your Dl# on their computer system and it will show them all your driving history. They are not stupid, but I have seen people use their old foreign driving license to prove their driving history to lower their insurance a lot.

Funny you ask this. I currently work for an insurance agency here in cali. To answer your question. Yes insurance companies can check for how long youve had ur license. But I agree you can deff use foreign driving experience to compensate for the non US driving lic period. However there is companies that will ask for that copy of foreign DL to be sent to them just to make sure you have the experience you claim to have. Nway I suggest u go to an agency, you have more options (companies) to choose from, instead of goin to a big brand name insurance company. Most of the times its the same coverage nway an you can save $$$.

Thanks for your replies! We were able to figure something out. I'll still be shopping around for a better price and hopefully as soon as my driving history is longer I'll find something better.

Have a great day everyone!
