So I have been working in the shadows for quite sometime since 06 and like most know we really did not have to go through the whole job interview process when we were trying to find work. It was either you knew someone or if you did not mind the crappy pay =) But now that I am legit I was wondering if any of you have any good tips or good advice you can share when you guys went through your job interview? I am humble that I now get to go to job interviews and apply to places where I once thought I could never apply to. Thanks guys for any input.

Be confident, I can't stress this enough. Make eye contact with the person that's interviewing you. Be honest and answer their questions to the best of your ability. A white lie here and there isn't too much of a problem unless they follow through. Dress nice, don't walk in wearing jeans and a t shirt, be classy but don't overdo it. Be assertive and stick to your convictions. I wish you good luck in any interviews you will have in the future.

I had jobs since 2006 too, and I had plenty of interviews if i could think an approx number I'd say near 30 interviews. I got hired in 96% of these interviews, I was not hired in just 2 or 3 of them. I was hired and let go for no papers in about 4 or 5 of them. So you can say I have plenty of experience on this. It goes from 14$/hour jobs all the way to corporate jobs, paying 85k/year, and everything in between. Here are my tips:

As Bertdude7 said, confidence is one of the primary things, that is something you can't leave behind. It don't matter what you wear as long you look nice, I have wore from ties, and tuxedo, to jeans and casual dress. Do look neat, regardless of what you wear. Be diligent, this will make sure you get that job. Know what you are talking about, study case scenario of what they will ask concerning the job. Social skills are very important, be solid, polite, diligent, straight forward.

I did all this without papers, with papers, you have nothing to worry about!.

On the latest interview I had (read here: http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.php?t=62432) I was actually hired for 40$/hour, to start but would go to high salary like near 100k. I ended up not getting hired for my papers, but this does not longer hurt me, I got used to it, and it is just my life. It just makes me more confident that I have what it takes to beat all the other applicants!. So if you don't get hired don't give up, just strive harder next time.

Try to google for "behavioral interview" questions. They're very popular.

There's lots of websites and books (check out your local library) with sample questions and answers. Going over them and practicing really helped me in my interviews. If there's a question you are scared they will ask you ( for me it was asking what I did from the time I graduated in 2012 to present), then write and rehearse an answer. Just make sure not to over rehearse.

Google, common interview questions, then write out your response then read it out loud to someone. Most people who interview don't go out there way to make the interview last more than like 10 mins. I've gone to like four interviews and they always ask the same questions. When can you start? How did you obtain your skills? Are you okay with the schedule have set? Tell me about yourself? Hobbies? Some people even make you write OUT your answers so they don't have to ask you them, like what are your strengths and weaknesses?

Tips: Dress to impress. Classy not trashy
Arrive always 10 mins early.
Answer honestly to your ability.
Don't over sell yourself, you don't want to sound desperate.

Most interviews I gone to lasts 1 hour, even two hours, at one time I had to be interview 3 times by the same company but different personnel, about 1.5 hour each time, that was the longest interview, in 3 days!. I did get that job. They really want to make sure they right person was hired that is why they put so many hoops!.

About the way you dress...

Always dress a step above what current workers in the company wear. This applies to any job from Mc'Donalds to a law firm. You can be underdressed and it's always a bad thing or you can overdress and it's sometimes a bad thing. So when in doubt always lean towards the latter. Don't dress like a GQ or Vogue catalogue to any job. High maintenance usually means prissy workers that complain jobs are too hard often. My brother was super qualified for a technician job that requires hard manual labor and was beaten by my slob of a cousin because he looked 'too soft' to be in the heat all day while my couisin looked like he could take a beating. If your job is entry level or hard in labor abstain from looking 'super pretty.' Generic and rugged are better then.

As far as interviews, sell yourself as an intelligent hard worker that would make a great friend and you should get any job. If experience is required count your blessings and fake it until you make it by slightly over selling yourself and hoping there is no better candidate.

Even when I got a SSN and driver's license I still didn't FEEL the benefits of DACA.

Then my temporary legal status finally sunk-in , when I was no longer scrolling through Craigslist paranoid and asking myself "Could it be possible this company hires illegals" every single fucking time...

*Feels good*
