Hi Dreamers,

When I applied for the BoA credit card, they sent me a letter saying that my SSN is incorrect.
I was told by a BoA representative to send in a copy of my SS card.

I was just wondering, is it safe to send a copy of my SS card to BoA? Are there alternate methods?

P.S. Does my first application submission lower my credit record?

Thanks!

I originally applied to BoA twice before being accepted on the third time. On each occasion I was rejected, I received a letter saying the SSN I filed with the application did not match/not on file. I'm assuming since I applied for my SSN in Dec it was relatively new in the system and needed time to update.

I wouldn't have a problem sending my SSN to BoA. However, if you're hesitant there are other banks and alternatives. Also, a submission will not dramatically lower your credit score. I originally applied to BoA (2x), AMEX, Discover, and Capital One. I checked my credit score the other day and it was 700+. Criteria such as paying your card on time and amount used are weighed more heavily than submissions.

Not to be outdone by the opposition, Citigroup is blasting out charge card deals by mail in the third quarter, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Coming to a North American home in your area in the 3rd quarter will be around 346 million charge card deals, as reported by figures compiled by research firm Synovate. It will cost $240 million for Citigroup to reach every single person in the U.S., greater than once. That is a huge installment loan for advertising.

Every time you apply for credit, there is a credit inquiry initiated by the issuing bank. Having multiple inquiries can lower your credit score. But, don't be afraid to apply. If there are multiple inquiries within a 45 day period; then they are grouped together into one.

Since you are just starting out. I would recommend the Capitol One secured MasterCard. You put down a $49 deposit and you get a $200 line of credit. You use it responsibly for 6mo then apply for an unsecured card.

I have a BofA credit card. I had it under a fake ss# before then when I got my real ss# I just told them I had to change it, showed them my new SS card and whithin a week they increased my credit limit! I also have a credit card with Capitol One, Discover, and Old Navy visa card. Don't be afraid, build your credit.

I'd start with Discover (and their student version if you are a student)

For those with limited or no credit history, w/o a doubt Capital One's basic platinum card is the best out there to start establishing history! Back when I applied couple of years ago, they started me off with $750 limit but I think these days they start you off with as much as $3,000!
