1040 is the Individual Tax Return that you will be filing. Your employer will give you a W2 which will summarize your 2013 income, soc and Medicare taxes, and income tax withheld. Also you will receive other tax statements like 1098-INT for any interest you earned, you'll receive a statement from ur college as well for tuition payments. The tax preparer will use all these to file your return accurately.

Employer gives you your W2

You also receive other statements from other areas of income like interest on your bank accounts, Paypal income etc.

You will also get important stuff that gives you more money back like tuition payment statements etc.

You basically take all of these things to your tax guy, and they will set you up by filing form 1040 and/or other forms if necessary...they mostly do all the complex work, you just have to bring all the proper paperwork to them so they are able to do your taxes.

Anyone recommend doing it ourselves? I'm going through the TurboTax process and it seems fairly easy, they do a good job at guiding and explaining everything.

I know many public libraries have free tax filing help (at least in my area).

If I sold 500-1000 dollars of worth on eBay through PayPal, do I need to report this? Will I get a W2 from PayPal?

Do I get a W2 in the mail from places I worked in 2013 or do I need to ask for them?

Edit: Found my answer to my first question.

Under the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, the Internal Revenue Service requires the PayPal corporation to report payment details for its customers who bring in more than $20,000 a year to their account or receive more than 200 payments per year.

My employer gave me my W2 in person, but I too always wondered how I would get it if I was no longer there.

I suspect if you no longer work there, you get it mailed to you automatically from your employer(as they should, to avoid problems), or you can call them within 2 weeks of the new year and ask them for a mailing status on your W2 or if you can go pick it up from them.

In general it is of the utmost importance that you get your W2s, so you will most likely get it rather quickly either in person or in the mail, but it is up to you to follow through with your employers if you have not received all your W2s yet.
