I'm trying to find the cheapest quote here in NJ and the cheapest for just liability is $300/mo for an old ass 95' Honda. What car insurance do you guys have? And what's a reasonable amount?

Progressive seems to be the best choice for new drivers, last year I was at 220xmonth. Now im at 145xmonth and once I reach 1 year with them ill get another discount. Insurance prices also depend on your living area and any safety features your car may have. Keep shopping around, prices don't really drop until you have 3 years with your DL.

Thanks for your response. It's really tough at that amount per month, I might as well be leasing a car!

Like Dres2011 said, shop around. Try getting a quote from every company you can. I actually recommend going to your local State Farm/Progressive/Geico/etc. office and getting a quote there. Yeah, it's time consuming and a bit of a pain in the ass, but the agents there may get you a lower quote than one online. A family member of a mine got a pretty reasonable quote after some education and life insurance discounts.

Thanks, hithere, I was thinking of walking in to see an agent. I've probably received a quote from 10 different auto insurance companies. I'll try my luck at an agency. It's tough being a first-time driver here in NJ! I'm freaking 26 years old and they're treating me like I'm 16! Not cool! Not cool at all.

No problem. And I feel you. I'm in NJ as well and insurance rates here can be brutal. But definitely try walking in and pleading your case. The agent may be able to work with your case and get you a discount or two . Good luck!

If youre under 24/25 its going to be a lot more expensive. Since you said youre 26, it should be better priced than that. But I guess the real reason why its expensive is because youre a new driver. You dont have a history yet. When youre 30+ it comes cheaper again. Try to see if you can get on someones policy who has really good rates. Im on my parents' policy and i pay around 150 a month for a '13 car.

Another thing you can do, is tell the insurance companies that youve been driving since you were 16 in another country (geico wont check). See if you can also get a student discount, and then take a defensive driver course to lower your rate.

@MDxOD I wish I could if my family had good driving records, so I'm stuck on my own. I don't know if I would lie about having my driver's license in a different country. I appreciate your input, I'll see what I can do.

@hithere What insurance company did you go with and are they good?
