So I visited the local optometrist recently and had an eye exam. My results are worse than I thought. Turns out I have bad kerataconus, (thinning of the cornea and elongated football shape). So the doc prescribed hard contacts, but said I could try glasses first, although with my prescription the lenses would be pretty thick on one side. My OS sphere is -11 and OD is -0.5 Do any of you wear hard contacts? If so, do you get any ghosting, or do you get a sharp picture? How bad is the irritation? Contacts are pretty damn expensive so I was wondering what kind of results I could expect. Any responses would be much appreciated.

I wear glasses never wore contacts, anyway i have astigmatism (a defect of vision due to astigmatism of the refractive system of the eye and especially to corneal irregularity) anyway my eye sight is horrible and my lenses would be pretty thick if i didn't get them thinned down. did you know they could do that? its great cuz if i didn't have that option I wouldn't wear glasses. I also have transitional lenses which is fancy for they turn into shades in the sun, i need that cuz the sun gives me a huge migraine. Glasses arnt that bad especially when they are designers, mines are Fendi, if im going to look like a nerd i want to do it in style LOl, i have never wore contacts so i cant help you with that, but if you dont want to wear the glasses b/c the lenses would be thick you always have the option of having them thinned.

I also have a good amount of astigmatism, (about -5 in each eye). I do know you can get 1.61 or 1.67 index polycarbonate. I have even seen 1.74 but I think that material is heavier than glass. Yep the photochromic lenses are cool but they're more. I ordered mine online from zenni, has good reviews and were about 30.00 with shipping. I will probably get all titanium frames with the 1.67 later. I could care less if I get designer frames or not lol. Just trying to be as comfortable as possible.

LOl, didnt mean to come off materialistic about the designer frames, but honestly what i have noticed is that you pay for what you get with glasses, the cheaper ones break way to easily and they arnt as pretty LOl, titanium frames are pretty expensive, i know someone who had to get titanium frames because she was allergic to all the other metals and i think she payed about $800 for the frame alone.

^ Heh, you know you're materialistic, all chicks are. Shows everytime...

Just messing...yea, I know those frames can be expensive but did you know most frames are made in foreign places anyway? The frames you pay $800 for are not much better than $40 frames online, straight from the manufacturer. I'll find out when I get mine though eh?

^ Did I get insurance with my glasses? No. I ordered them online so no insurance. Their return policy is 50% refund and you pay the difference on a new frame.

If you are asking am I getting mine with insurance, that is also negative. Cash baby!!!

I've been wearing contacts (soft contacts) for about nine years and really had no problem with them. I also have a slight astigmatism. My eyes are rarely irriated to the extent I can't wear my contacts, but everyone reacts differently. Some people are more sensitive, but nowadays they have so many different brands of contacts that you should be able to find one that works for you. My mom has used hard contacts since she was a teenager.
