So i'm tired of all this bs and have decided to get a new comp. As i mentioned before, the one i use right now is pathetically old, so i need a serious upgrade. I'm not looking to run Crysis on it, just something nice and modern i can play a few cool games on. I've been thinking my budget's gonna be around a grand for this, so what do you guys recommend? should i try to build the whole damn thing myself? Would i be in way over my head?

Don't buy one!!

Build the whole thing by yourself. And no you won't be over your head. All the components come with installation instructions. And now you can practically download Operating systems online. For one grand, you can build yourself a pretty tricked out computer. Just get a powerful processor, and nice video/audio cards for a better gaming experience.

As much as i'd love to say go ahead and build one, i'd recommend against it. You'll just frustrate yourself and maybe even break a couple of expensive parts due to newbie mistakes. I'd even venture to say that it'll run you even more to build your own than get something from dell. They have piles and piles of overstock so they can afford to undercut their competitors quite a bit.

http://www.slickdeals.net/ has great deals at times, not that long ago a quadcore (think 4 processors in one) with 2 gigs of ram was going for less than 1k. And normally this processor alone goes for an average of $500, so it's as top of the line you can get. I say just watch the site and when a good deal comes up, jump on it. If you don't like computers, they won't like you, especially if you try building one.

Right now, i think i'm leaning towards buying the whole thing and then learning while upgrading before venturing into doing the whole thing by myself. Now i just need to find the right one for me.

Looks good, personally I'd go with a more standard case and invest into more horsepower under the hood. But again it's just me, if looks are important to you go with whatever suites your tastes.

As far as the OS goes, again personal preference. In my opinion Vista has really been a flop, I'd just stick with XP Pro if there was a choice.

Other than that it looks like a solid system.

I mostly built my systems myself. It's not hard but it's not exactly easy either. The only place I've bought computers from is www.cyberpowerpc.com. They have reasonable prices, allow customization, and have a fairly good track record. I've owned three systems from them and was very pleased with each one.

I'd avoid these bargain websites that sell ready to ship computers. They're just retailers and you should buy from someone who has experience and customer support.

If you're going to buy one, research about how to build it first. The last thing you wanna do is break the parts you've bought. Otherwise, look for something that has at least 1 GB and a good NVIDIA chipset in it. There are many crappy chipsets out there... Make sure you look for the right one that will enable you to play games.

That system you picked out is pretty damn solid. I did a little research for you on benchmarks and checking specs and its a good system. You actually will be able to run crysis, albeit on about medium settings. I build all of my systems, but if I had about $1000 to spend on a ready made system, I would most likely grab that one. Oh and newegg effin rocks. Not to mention you will get it in around 2 days.

If for some unexplainable reason you do decide to build one from scratch at this time, pm me and I can guide you along from start to finish.

Edit: I just noticed it has 64 bit vista installed on it. (from a comment anyway they could be wrong) That might cause you headaches with current software. But you can always back up vista and download and install xp for now.
