What are some of your opinions on MAVNI?

I went online the other day to try to find additional information. I entered my information so someone can contact me and I got the following email:

Thank you for your interest in the Military Accessions Vital to the National
Interest (MAVNI).

The MAVNI program is temporarily closed and we have not received any
official messages or publication regarding the possible reopening of the
MAVNI program for FY 2015.

Upon our receiving the official announcement of the reopening of MAVNI
program for FY2015, information will then be published on the official Army
Linguistic Facebook page at www.facebook.com/usarmy09ltranslator.

Well that takes care of that. I just also wanted to gauge the general consensus on MAVNI of the users of DreamAct.info.

What are some the duties of one that speaks a language that qualifies for MAVNI?

My friend talked to a marine recruiter. The recruiter had no idea what he was talking about, but instead of turning my buddy away, he phoned a higher up for info. The higher up informed the recruiter that it is indeed an exception for daca beneficiaries, but that they are still working on the procedures and paper work.

As far as the program goes, the recruiter gets on the phone with someone who speaks the language you are claiming to qualify under, and conferences you in. They gauge your grammar, vernacular, etc of the language and go from there.

In my friends case, he speaks spanish, english, and arabic. He has been wanting to go into the marines all his life, but because of his overstay status as a child, he never got the chance to join when he turned 18. He spent time studying foreign languages like arabic figuring it would help his chances at joining at one point as a linguistics expert of sorts. His intuition turned out to benefit him greatly. He is currently talking to his recruiter and working out the process.

So your friend is actually Hispanic but he learned arabic. That's pretty cool. I only speak Hindi. Don't write or read it.

Yep self taught and took classes at a community college. He was dedicated to it lol, I give him props. Its ridiculous that a man like that is not allowed to fight for this country because of some papers.

The US Marine Corps does not accept any MAVNIs. So if your friend is talking to a Marine Corps recruiter, the recruiter should tell him this. Only the Army accepts MAVNIs, and the Army has not yet decided whether it will take DACAs. Also, if you have undocumented parents or your spouse or child is undocumented, you are not eligible for MAVNI. Finally, it's not enough to speak some Arabic--you must speak it at the level of a native speaker in order to qualify for MAVNI. Also, MAVNIs are not typically recruited to be interpreter aides; most of them are in the infanty, combat medic, or some other job that does not require a security clearance. Non citizens are not allowed to get a security clearance, so they cannot enlist into a job that requires one--and military linguist requires a clearance. MAVNIs who speak Arabic fluently may be able to enlist as a 09L (interpreter aide) but not as a linguist.
