Anyone who can give advise on how to obtain a Credit Card? Anyone who obtained a credit card recently? I applied to wells Fargo secure card, but i got a letter( 2/16/2015) stating that they could prove my identity, and my application was denied. When i first got my social and permit two years ago i tried to obtain a credit card through Chase, but they said the social did not pass because i was not a citizen or permanent us resident. Chase also told me that the only way i could get a credit card was if i had 10K in the bank, which at the time was crazy. If anyone who recently obtained a credit card and could give some advice? I searched the forums, but the stories of success seem to be people who had already a credit record.

Long story short Wells Fargo doesn't give you anything if you're not at least PR. Even their secured cards don't "upgrade" to regular cards until can confirm you are PR.

Make sure that on the applications you put that you are a resident - don't get this confused with declaring LPR or citizenship, its not the same. You won't get in trouble.

If student, try for capital one journey, I was insta approved in seconds. Some people have luck with discover it. If all else fails do first progress. One user says "they literally approve everyone." Or just do any recured card at a bank - you don't need to actually bank with most banks to get a secured card from them.

My route capital one journey -> one year later AmexEveryday

Its really not that hard.

Get Capital One Secured Card or Even Student Version you can try for. Once you get it. Keep using it for 5-6 months. After that apply for a Discover card. You will by than have a little history for credit, not good or best, but enough to get you going. And don't apply too many times. Just stick with 1-2 cards a year.

Wells Fargo will give you only if you have good balance history.

Def. try with capital one, after that I would try with Bank of America. If you can bank with a credit union even better they are super understanding with loans and credit cards.

Discover has a history of approving a lot of first time applicants. I applied to Discover about 10 days after I received my SSN and was instantly approved for a $500 limit. It wasn't much much its a start to building up your credit. After 6 months the increased it and now have a credit history with them that allowed me to get approved at CAPITAL ONE-KOHLS-AMEX.

I don't recommend applying everywhere, do your research and apply for the cards that are most likely to accept you. Credit Karma can tell you the reviews and have actual reviews from people who applied and have gotten accepted or not. I recommend checking that out.

I'm in the same boat. I actually tried applying for the Discover card among other cards. It didn't work for me. So, I'm waiting awhile because I don't want to abuse the number of cards I've applied.

Discover works for some and not for others. I applied 2x in one year (don't ask) and was denied. I started with a Citi secure credit card. I wasn't approve right away. I received a letter in the mail asking for proof of income (pay stubs) and proof of identity (copy of social and government id). That's how I started and after 2 years they did allow me to have a non secure credit card, HOWEVER they do not raise spending limits easily.

Thanks for the info everyone. I was surprised that i got denied at wells fargo, i have about 3 years banking with them. Ever since i started working (thanks to daca ) i was able to save 12k in the bank. Ill do a search based on the recommendations and apply again. It seems like everyone has a different experience, hopefully i can get a credit card.
