Traveling to Mexico City

Hey guys finally got my green card and want to travel to Mexico City and the surrounding areas since I still have a lot of family there, they tell me it's not like they show on TV but I'm still a little scared of traveling with my wife and 2 small kids. Has anyone been there recently that can give me some info on their experience?

Why are you scared of traveling to Mexico city if you mind me asking?

It's safer than most Mexican cities. It really depends on what borough you are going to. Some are so shitty I would never step foot there. I have been to Mexico City a couple of times and really believe it's the best city in the country.

Idk just hearing all the stories of robberies and kidnappings makes me scared, especially going with my wife and kids.

Yeah the borough that I would be going to is kinda shitty, now that I think about it I think that's the main reason why im iffy about it. If I was to go to Mexico City only I wouldn't really mind since that's a major tourist area.

I was born in in Mexico City but haven't gone back since 7 years old. My dad lives there and it all depend where you go just like any large city. You should be fine and if you have family there they will take you to the tourist locations. I think last year it was voted the #1 place to travel

I would avoid public transportation with the kids. I was there in August and its was a great experience. Mexico City is beautiful and has a lot to offer. I have a lot of extended family still living there so they drove us around. It's hard not to stand out even if you are Mexican because their way of speaking is different than that of someone who grew up in the states. Well at least that what my family said to me. I'm fluent in Spanish but they said that I had an accent when I spoke it.

It depends on what borough you go to. Do not go to Iztalapa, it is very dangerous.
