Hello!

I am to get married soon (to a US citizen) and am wondering what the process is to get my last name changed on all of my documents. I know that for a citizen all that's needed is a trip to the social security office with a marriage certificate to request the last name be changed on the social security card.

Have any of you been through the process? If so could you please briefly explain the steps..

Should I contact immigration and file any specific documents BEFORE I get married?

And after getting married if DACA is still good for another year..whats the next step?
Does it get cancelled out, Should I apply for residency, Do I NEED a lawyer or would I be able to file everything myself as I did for DACA? And do they require you go back to your country and reenter before applying for permanent residency?

I'm so worked up and nervous about this. I'm very much looking forward to hearing some feedback!

The marriage certificate should suffice for a name change. You can only change your name AFTER you have gotten it. I honestly wouldn't request a name change until I am ready to apply for AOS.

Is the name change required for AOS?

No, you have the right to keep your name and not adopt your partner's name. Nothing to worry about especially if its a legit marriage.

Yeah my girlfriend lives in the Emma Watson world where women take care of finances etc.. and idk how she would feel about changing her name...

USCIS should change their practices to better fit the modern times.

The The first time I applied I sent the application with my maiden name then the renewal I sent the application with my married name on a separate piece of paper I was explaining why I was changing my last name and I send a copy of my current EAC card a copy of my drivers license front and back and that's it. You just got to make sure you fill out The part where it says other name used.

I just got married and was thinking that immigration would frown if women don't change their name. However, I rather not change my last name because I'm trying to avoid name confusion with immigration. Do you have to change DACA card with married last name or wait until renewal again? I'm worried that if I apply for a job DL, and SS will not match the DACA card.

They don't. Many couples who don't change their last names go through the AOS process without issues

Having said that, changing your last name because of marriage is not too difficult with USCIS. You should be consistent though, so if you change one, you should change all docs. Your EAD approval notice (I-797) should have instructions on what to send to them to update your name on your EAD without having to re-apply
