Given how it's highly likely that I'm going to lose my job come December (when my current permit expires), I've been mulling what to do with my time in 2018. I've got cash, a car that can be sold, and a 401k that can be cashed in - with this I can survive for a couple of years.

So... given how my 2018 calendar is looking to be quite clear, why not hike the PCT or the AT? The PCT would be a bit dangerous - I'd have to start 50-100 miles inland to avoid BP (since the trail literally starts at the border). That should keep me occupied April through mid-term elections.

What do you think? Awesome idea or awesome idea.

Why not dude. I took a 2 hour hike when I was in upstate NY. There is some sights to behold when doing those trails.

I've been out to Shenadoah and it's quite beautiful. I can see getting lost for five months and 2,500 miles out there

Only issue is being mistaken for an itinerant person..

I was thinking of doing the California pacific crest trail it starts in San Diego and ends almost in Canada . The hike takes about 5 to 8 months to complete and requires a lot of money for supplies you can have your family mail you supplies at each out post .

The idea sounds awesome. It reminds me "Into the wild" movie, just don't lose it. Also, don't waste all your savings, you will need them if the worst were to happen.

When the shit hits the fan I'm gonna relocate to Hawaii and live in the wilderness. Not even kidding. I know people.

That sounds awesome, but I'd rather live in a remote cabin out in the mountains

You're never more than a day or so away from civilization on the AT (unless you're up in the 100 mile wilderness in Maine). It's a civilized, well marked path through some of the most beautiful national forests in the US. It's also not that expensive - maybe $5-6k for gear & food (most of the expenditure is in backpacking food).

Not expensive if I'm homeless

You should still renew if the 6 month delay thing is in fact happening.
