Goodlatte Statement on Ending Executive Overreach on Immigration

Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, today issued the following statement on President Trump’s decision to end former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“Throughout President Obama’s time in office, he used his ‘pen and phone’ to overstep his authority and unilaterally rewrite our nation’s laws. Individuals who were brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents as children are in a very difficult position, but no president has the authority to change the law on his own terms. President Obama’s refusal to enforce our immigration laws and decision to unilaterally create immigration programs encouraged more illegal immigration and contributed to the surge of unaccompanied minors and families seeking to enter the U.S. illegally. His actions were wholly unconstitutional and compromised the integrity of the immigration system and the rule of law.

“President Trump has done the right thing by ending this unlawfully-contrived program. In addition to working on immigration enforcement legislation, per the President’s request, I stand ready to work with the Trump Administration and my colleagues in Congress to address this problem the right way: through reasonable legislation passed by Congress, rather than by executive fiat.”

Call your reps today!! Dont put it off anymore, make your voices heard, posting your frustation and ideas on this forum will not solve anything at all, call your reps and tell them what you feel amd want! This is the time to act, my reps office is only 5 mins from my house so i spoke with him before he left back to dc last week. MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD! Even if your rep is a republican call and leave a message with what you want. Midterm elections are next year dont forget that.

“However well-intentioned DACA may have been, the program was created by executive edict rather than by Congress as the Constitution requires. Because of President Obama’s executive overreach, DACA has faced numerous legitimate legal challenges, and now President Trump has asked Congress to sort it out,” Grassley said.

“Any legislative solution is going to have to be a compromise that addresses the status of those who have been unlawfully brought to this country and upholds the rule of law. President Trump should continue to work with Congress to pass reforms through the legislative process that encourage lawful immigration. In the meantime, I expect that the Administration’s immigration enforcement priorities will continue to target the thousands of criminals ahead of those who have otherwise abided by our laws.”
