Hey guys! So I am traveling to San Diego tomorrow. I am a little worried because it is close to the border and I'm sure there is border patrol at the airport and in town? Anyways, I'm supposed to drive up to San Francisco. I wanted to know if anyone has encountered any problems going through the checkpoints recently? Which way would be better to take? San Clemente or Temecula? I know that we technically are still ok but just want to be prepared and would not want to run through any problems. Thanks in advance!

Threads indicate that some people have been detained and held for hours due to CPB technical glitches. I am 100% sure there is a checkpoint between San Diego and LA. You should check local news to monitor what is going on around the check point. My guess is that you should be fine, carry your ead.

I live pretty close to Temecula but never go any farther south than that. Although it shouldn't be a problem I don't like tempting fate. I like going to the mall there, beautiful town.

Yea there is 2 checkpoints. One in San Clemente I-5 and the other one on I-15? Anyways, I will bring my EAD and deferred action letter just in case. Some say the checkpoint are closed at times or they wave you through but that is why I wanted to see how it has been recently, specially since Trump got into office.

I went in April and a few times last year. The checkpoint in san Clemente was always closed. The DACAs down there used to tell me you would be ok with your EAD. Not sure about now.

When you're driving to San Diego there is no checkpoint in San Clemente. When you're driving back to San Francisco there is a check point. The only times I seen it open is late at night like around midnight. Even when it's open. They just wave you off, it seems like they already know who they're looking for based on tips.

Speaking of tips here is one. Once your in San Clemente becareful with your driving and try not to speed. Certain Border Patrol cars do hide around to catch speedy drivers. They do have jurisdiction so they can stop you for any driving violation. That included parts of the area in Oceanside.

Try to avoid driving through I-15 checkpoint through Temecula. That's more riskier and when you're in San Diego, try to avoid places like San Ysidro and other border towns.

Overall I think you'll be fine. I have been driving back and forth to Los Angeles alot, and never had an issue on the I-5 check point.

The only checkpoint in San Ysidro is the border between the US and Mexico. Once you're in San Ysidro there is no other checkpoint from their to the airport.

By the way, just 2 hours ago. I drove from San Diego to LA on the I-5 and the check point was close. I did notice Border Patrol cars hiding on the side of the road to catch anyone speeding or suspicious. So please drive safe.

Also, never travel in a Bus such as a Greyhound or any other bus. All buses are subject to inspection no matter what. So again, be careful.

I fly into san diego for work at least twice a year, most recently in july. never had a problem at the airport, and never felt uncomfortable at the airport or within san diego. Last two times i drove in and around san diego up to oceanside and never came across border patrol, but like other posters, drive safe and be careful, times are definitely different.

I did pass by the i-5 checkpoint once but was closed, it was a tuesday afternoon. Interesting fact though, i checked google maps later that evening and there was red/heavy traffic at the checkpoint area, so i can only assume it was open then. good luck!
