White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Wednesday assured Hispanic Democrats that President Donald Trump will not allow protections for DACA recipients to lapse and that he would initially forego restrictions on family-based immigration, the Washington Examiner reported.

Kelly was trying to drum up support for another short-term spending bill in exchange for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) now, and protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) later, the Examiner reported.

Kelly suggested that Trump would table chain migration and the visa lottery if the Democrats could get behind the continuing resolution, the Examiner reports.

Though Democrats called the meeting "constructive," they rejected Kelly's olive branch out of their steadfast demand to have DACA codified now, not later.

"What was surprising, is (Kelly) said, 'Well, we should just take out those things that we can't agree on and pass those things that we can agree on,'" a House Democratic aide told the Examiner.

"'If the group of No. 2s say that's the best they can come up with, that is something the president may sign,'" the aide told the Examiner, quoting Kelly.

It was also during this meeting that Kelly said that Trump's positions about immigration had "evolved" since the campaign, a notion Kelly repeated later Wednesday in an interview on Fox News.

"The tone was something to the effect that what was said during the campaign is not necessarily what's going to be done in government," Rep. Adriano Espaillat told the Examiner.

However, Trump quashed that during early morning tweets Thursday.
I don't envy Kelly's position. Although, this crisis was manufactured by the President and Attorney General after they cancelled DACA.

It's more surprising that Kelly didn't get fired yet. He's a chief of staff, someone appointed.

Either he is crazy or he thinks the can talk Trump's stupid head out of the wall and other stuff.

John Kelly, please do away with Stephen Miller and this will get done. Use his forehead to cover the span of the entire wall for all I care.

Yeah I’m calling bullshit on Kelly and I hope that the Dems do too. I don’t have an iota of trust for the Republicans or anyone in the White House. They are all greasy, conniving LIARS.

I am not sure if Kelly is playing along with Trump, or this is just another smack-in-the-face embarrassing moment for Kelly, like when Trump did to Tillerson.

But Trump knows he has to sign on CHIP - he’s bluffing. Without CHIP some R will definitely say no. So he knows he has to. He’s playing. He’s offering nothing new here.

How can he be trusted when his own boss changes his position every few hours?
If he can make Trump table those two components (chain migration and visa lottery) like that, why don't they just do DACA along with CHIP in a CR or a long-term spending bill?

The White House has no credibility.
