U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained a Michigan doctor last week who has been living in the U.S. for nearly forty years, according to Grand Rapids's NBC affiliate WOOD-TV.

Lukasz Niec, who came to the U.S. from Poland when he was five years old with his sister and parents, is being held at Calhoun County jail, according to the report.
Quote:
Until this gets heard, which could be up to six months, he could be stuck in a prison cell and not helping and being with his family,” Iwona Niec-Villaire said.

The news outlet reported Niec was convicted when he was 17 on one charge of destruction of property less than $100 and receiving and concealing stolen goods.

Niec reportedly pled guilty to the charges under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which helps young first-time offenders keep charges off of a criminal record, but ICE does not honor the state plea agreement.

This guy would have been a DREAMer except he already has his green card. Unless there's more to the story than is being reported, ICE is out of control.

Maybe he didn't want to give up EU citizenship? It's still nuts to detain him on a minor charge that happened when he was 17.

Wow. Pretty similar to what happened with those who were already DACA approved and got their permits taken away because of old DUIs or misdemeanors.

This is just not normal. Aren’t there more high priority immigrants to worry about?

That's why I'm worried. We will be the first ones targeted when our protection lapses, we're easy pickings.

I met very old polish people who still on greencard. The plan is to retire back home in poland.

I am guessing the charge is a felony?

If misdemeanor, then that is truly fucked up
