I hear how some of you guys got DL in California for 5 years. Is it a Federal Limits apply DL? Is there a trick to extending the DL past your daca expiration date?

got two 5 year CA DL's since 2012 DACA.

2012-2017
2017-2022

no federal limits, its a hit or miss really.. my next renewal in 2022, i might not get a 5 yr DL.

thats why im not gonna apply for the REAL ID after finding out that they will give u a new license based on your EAD exp.

as i told you, its a hit or miss dude.

sometimes you'll get a 2 yr DL or 3 yr based on your EAD.

i got lucky twice, i might not get a 5 yr DL in 2022.

The reason some of us were able to get a 5 year license is due to human errors at the DMV. Since the beginning of DACA, we should all have gotten 2 year licenses that expired on the same date as our EADs, but due to DACA being new and the DMV not notifying their employees, some of us were given regular 5 year licenses. A short while later, the DMV issued a statement saying that anyone with an EAD through DACA would receive a 2 year license. Some of us who have the original 5 year license have been able to sucessfully renew and receive another 5 year license. I originally received a 5 year license and lost my wallet last year with my license in it, I went to the DMV to get a replacement and since it was a couple months out before it would have expired I instead applied for a renewal and got another 5 year license. If you don't have a prior 5 year license, you can expect to get a 2 year only, it SHOULD NOT have the 'federal limits' since that is only issued to people who don't show any legal documentation, aka, illegal immigrants.
