Kudos to Sen. Jeff Flake for pushing a minimalist immigration compromise that takes care of the most urgent issues. Let’s hope Congress can manage enough of a break from partisan warring to pass it.

The Arizona Republican this week will introduce a bill to set up a legal three-year extension of President Barack Obama’s unconstitutional Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and add $7.6 billion over three years to border-security spending, including funds for President Trump’s wall.

Action on DACA is urgent because Trump’s temporary protection for these young people is set to expire soon, and almost no one wants to leave them without any legal status.

But any permanent solution is tricky: After all, they got the name “Dreamers” from the proposed Dream Act — which didn’t have the votes to become law even when Democrats controlled supermajorities in Congress in the early Obama years.

Which helps explain why Trump, as part of any deal that offers permanent legal status and a path to citizenship for the Dreamers, wants other immigration reforms.
But most Democrats won’t take that deal; that’s why we’ve long warned that only a small-scale deal is practical.

Flake admits his bill “is far from a perfect solution,” but it’s a start.

Make the permit renewable. Until then, Flake can take out two ribs and suck his own permit.

They are going to get border security money, and we get something temporary. I hope Trump threatens to veto the fucking thing. Flake is such a weak bitch.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't he the only one bringing something to the floor this week?? He's been vocal about it

There is a proposal by Thunes that makes DACA permanent, but Flake dislikes the idea because it would make us second class citizens. Yeah, like his idea is better, risk deportation in 3 years.

We aren't terminal cancer patients. Flake has shitty ass ideas.

We can settle for permanent DACA then ask for changes later on.

Fuck this bill, no one wants this bill besides Flake.

All he wants is his name on a big issue before he retires.

This does not belong in the news section. This is an opinion piece with no substance.

The title bugs me "the right compromise to save the dreamers" *only includes daca holders*

While I'm not happy about any of these ideas that don't lead to green cards (and eventual citizenship), I do believe a permanent DACA means Congress is unlikely to touch the issue in the near future.

I agree, I would be for a permanent DACA, but Flake wants $7.6B for just 3 years reprieve.

No Democrat will go for this.

Being in the same place in 3 years is not any better.
