Hello. I'm new here and my mom thought it was a good idea to join this because i can get pretty depressed about my status in the US. So i thought i would give it a try...

Umm, i was brought to the US when i was less than a year old so i guess that's a pretty long time. I think i found out that i was born in Mexico when i was about 4 years old because i have a letter i wrote around that time to President Clinton asking him to let me and my parents stay here. i didnt really understand the situation until i got rejected on getting my drivers permit for not having a social security or the "right documents". i have to say that hurt pretty bad especially knowing that my little sister might have to drive me around since she was born here, which is kind of funny because it should be the other way around, you know?? . I think i lost all my hope right there on the spot. This past school year was my senior year, you know the year where i am supposed to apply to colleges, and i just couldn't do it. i thought of how much money i would have to pay because im not from here and i just couldn't apply. So i didn't. My dream was to go to UT or to some really nice univerisity and i felt like my status would not help me. So i signed up for community college which is better than not going at all. Anyway i signed up, said that i wasnt born here and that i live here and blah blah blah. The college said that i was an international student and that i have to pay double a texas resident's fee. sometimes i feel like just not going to spare my parents the money. I'm sorry if you think i'm whining too much but i just never feel comfortable telling other people this because all of my close friends are citizens and i feel out of place. i'm just really glad that there's a place where i can actually talk about this. I'm really hoping that the DREAM act will pass not just for my own good, but for every person that has hope for their future. Anyway thanks for reading this. I'm happy i could tell someone about this.

Welcome,

I can imagine how you feel..I've been here for 6 years and I already feel like this is my home. You've been here your whole life, pretty much.

Don't give up on college, I know most of them are quite expensive and you think you cannot afford it, but there are options. Loans, scholarships, and if you do well enough, maybe even a full ride at an Ivy. Despite our status here, I still think we do have some choices.

You shouldn't have to pay international rates. In Texas, thanks to HB1403, undocumented students are able to pay in-state tuition as long as they graduated from a TX high school (which it looks like you have). You may also be able to qualify for financial aid.

Visit this link to get better informed about this and make sure you let your school know you're not an international student. You can also use the search function for more info. about HB1403 around the forum.

And welcome to DAP. I'm sure you'll find some comfort in knowing you're not alone
