Hello everyone,

I was writing a personal statement for school admissions. I gave my personal statement to several people and they all said the same thing. "If your immigration status affected you in the past how can you show admissions that it won't affect you in the future? Especially, since DACA is a nonpermanent status."

I really don't know how to address it, it feels like I locked myself into a hole.

My thoughts on this are the following:

1) you overcame your obstacles of being undocumented by getting DACA and you’ll overcome whatever may come your way with the next law that may pass or through legal routes that will allow you a path to citizenship.

2) the past and the future are two different things. The past Is the past. You don’t know what will happen in the future, they may pass comprehensive immigration or you’ll find the love of your life that will petition you.

3) just as DACA isn’t a permanent status, your current situation isn’t permanent. You’ll one way or another be able to adjust.

Best of luck!

Locked self into hole is regular monday morning for DACA. The question isnt why am I locked in a hole, but what can I do within this hole to improve my current situation?

Also you really cant show that it wont affect you in the future cause we are essentially screwed unless by some major miracle Trump wakes up on the right side of the bed and fights for us to get somewhere. DACA is meant for us to move into something more permanent, but if congress sees no urgency, and can't wrangle enough cats into a bag to get a vote then the bridge is a bridge to nowhere.

Here's how you can prove it wont affect you, show monetary capability. Show that you can finish your school things. Show that even if daca were to be rescinded you can pull through. Once congress gets off their asses and gets to work, and puts those effeminate wrists to commanding interns to work on writing bills, then you will happily, proudly, and wholeheartedly apply for permanent status.

"If your immigration status affected you in the past how can you show admissions that it won't affect you in the future? Especially, since DACA is a nonpermanent status."

That's all I have.

Also community colleges don't care about DACA, dunno if you're starting college, but start there then go to a regular uni. Any state uni is reasonably fine, its the Dog behind the degree that makes the paper, not the degree makes the Dog.

What kind of school is this for?

Also, there's no better tearjerker story than being a DREAMer.

As for the permanent/non-permanent status thing, think of being an illegal immigrant as like having cancer. It could be a permanent life-ending thing or it could be a temporary thing you get over. When you write a personal statement think of it in those terms - it's a thing I'm dealing with, and it's hard, and I will make it through it!

Why did you write about DACA in your personal statement? I kept my immigration status out of everything. Many more things one can talk about. Immigration is too controversial and you never know who will end up reading your personal statement. Thats my opinion.

Don't make things about your immigration status...

Your immigration status stops being something compelling after high school. My guess is that you have DACA, at your age that means you have the benefits of everyone else. You know everyone isnt lucky enough to be American. Many people in college are foreign students who would give a lot for a DACA status.

I think it is fine to write about your immigration status. Colleges for the most part are very supportive of the DREAMers. I don't see why you would have to show the college that your immigration status won't effect your future. It is something that you can't possibly know. You are only in college for a few years, and continuing your studies is something that is possible even without DACA.

I agree swim, I just hope his personal statement is not all about immigration.

He should make a brief but compelling mention of it.

DACA passed after I was well into college. This is a personal statement for med school. My status was hell for me trying to get into a Texan college. So I didn't have the same benefits as Americans or international students for a very long time. It took me longer to graduate because I was paying for college out of pocket. This was before a lot of scholarships were out there for dreamers, trust me I tried.

I've read the typical tearjerking story of a kid from a poverty-stricken country coming to America with the hopes and dreams of becoming a doctor. I don't think the Dreamer story is like that, it's very unique, only 700,000 of us in this nation have the Dreamer story. Yes, many have the story without the status, but only 700,00 of us are labeled Dreamers, and not all of us are applying to med school.

Usually, more than one person reads your statement. Generally, a group of people don't have the same opinion about everything. Also, if a school rejects me for my immigration status, then its just as well, especially in med school. In med school, you need a community that supports you.
